彼女の通算7枚目のスタジオアルバムである今作はいわば『今風』な仕上がり。と言っても決して薄っぺらいものではなく、MARYのソウルフルな歌声や力強いリリックはそのまま、捨て曲なしの完成度の高い作品です。今回は《BROOK》として自らがフィーチャーしたり、ROCK界の大御所U2との驚きのコラボがあったりと見所(聴き所?)満載で楽しめるアルバムになっています。また他ゲストも、2005年『MONKEY BUSINESS』で大成功を収めたBEPのWILL.I.AMを迎えたり、JAY-ZやRAPHAEL SAADIQ、DAVE YOUNGとそうそうたるメンバーが揃っています。また楽曲の方は、THE GAMEのHATE IT OR LOVE ITをリメイクした10曲目のMJB Da MVPではMARY自身が自ら製作に乗り込んだ程の作品で、何と言ってもリリックが堂々としていて《Queen of HIPHOP SOUL》の名のもとに最高です。また6曲目のGood Woman Downでは世の悩める女性達に向けたメッセージが込められている一曲で、是非女性達に聴いてほしい作品です。詳細は…本作を買ってみて下さい。笑 私自身この曲に勇気づけられました。
シングルカットされたBE WITHOUT YOUやENOUGH CRYIN等他にも良作がたくさんあります。彼女のアーティストとしての成長や、一人の女性としての成長をより感じる事ができると思います。アルバムタイトルの《The Breakthrough》(現状打破)は、今回彼女が伝えたかったものの一番のキーポイントだというのは言うまでもないですね。また、彼女の生き様が綴られたこのアルバムがファンの助けになるであろうという事も同様です。彼女の様に素晴らしい成長を遂げるには《現状打破》が必要だということではないでしょうか。

MARYファンには、今回もまた手に入れないわけにはいきませんね。

初めてメアリーＪを聴いた時のような衝撃はないにしろ、彼女の
人の深さと生きてきた道や考えが、ダイレクトに伝わり、いつも感銘を
受けます。
メアリーＪの曲から伝わるメッセージを、同じ女として行き方の参考にしています。落ち着いて聴ける1枚です。

完成度の高いアルバムで、安心して聴ける。さすがの貫禄である。

しかし彼女の作品の中ではこれといったものを感じなかったかもしれない。
どの作品にも「これは！」と思う曲があったり、
アルバム全体としてメアリーならではの存在感を放っていたりするが、
今回は単純に「良く出来たアルバム」という印象だった。
しかしまだまだ聴き込みが足りないし、
音楽的に聴く価値があるのは確かなので
これからもしっかり聴いていきたいと思わせるアルバムであることは間違いない。
少なくともメアリーのパワーは遺憾無く発揮されているのでその点は安心だ。

今作は「My Life」や「mary」などの傑作には及ばないと感じるが、
「No More Drama」の一般受けしそうなインパクトと
「Love & Life」の落ち着いた表現が上手く昇華された形でまとまっていると思う。
これから先、昔のような「不幸」ではなく現在の「幸福」を形にして
自身の残した過去の傑作を超える作品を生み出すことを期待したい。

最後に念を押しておくが、このアルバムも十分に
彼女のキャリアにとってプラスとなる良作である。
聴きこめばさらに魅力に気付き、評価は上がるかもしれない。
彼女のファンでなくとも、R&B好きにはぜひ聴いてほしい。
