後半の中国軍によるチベット侵略は壮絶でした。それまでの牧歌的でほのぼのとした雰囲気が一変して、残酷で目を背けたくなるような恐ろしいものに変わってしまいました。

わたしはこの映画を見るまではよく知らなかったのですが、今の時代にあんな恐ろしいことが大国の軍により行われているのですね。
日本のマスコミは何故、報道しないのか不思議で仕方ないのですが、このような映画を通じてたくさんの人にチベットの悲劇が知れ渡ることは、大変に意義のあることだと思います。

こういうのも映画のもつ力なのでしょう。

中華民国時代のチベットに逃げ込んだオーストリア人登山家ハインリッヒ・ハラーが主人公である。

この映画を見るまで、チベットが1950年に中華人民共和国に武力統合され、現在も独立を勝ち得ていないということすら知らなかった。
世界史はいわば侵略と戦争の歴史であるが、第２次世界大戦後民族自決の原則により、アフリカも含めてほとんどの民族が自らの国の独立を達成しているのに、チベットはいまだ中国の統治下にある。日本の侵略を非難する一方で、少数民族に対しての軍事支配を今も続けている中国、こうした政治の二面性を知るだけでも観る価値がある映画である。

映像美は完璧であり、ポタラ宮殿が本物ではなく、アルゼンチンで作成されたセットであるというのだから驚きである。チベットの雰囲気が非常によく出ている。

オーストリア人のハラーも、ダライ・ラマも話すのは英語、日本人は比較的違和感なくこの事実に慣れているが、チベット人からすればチベットが舞台なのにみんな英語を話しているという状況は違和感を覚えるのではないか。日本を舞台にした映画で、日本人が皆英語を話しているようなものだ。

チベットは外部侵略する意図のない平和友好的な仏教国家であり、ダライ・ラマ14世はノーベル平和賞も受賞した。監督もブラピも中国への入国を永久に禁止されているという。発展著しい中国であるが、少数が虐げられる現状が封殺されているという現状を再度認識できた。映画のひとつの価値である。

　本作品はハインリヒ・ハラーの著書「チベットの７年」がもとになっている。ハラーはドイツ隊の一員として、ヒマラヤの魔の山・ナンガパルバットに遠征した。そして下山したところをイギリス軍につかまる。ちょうど第二次大戦がおきたときだったからである。
　映画は、ハラーが収容所を脱出してチベットにのがれ、中国がチベットを侵略するまでを描いている。この映画はプロパガンダが目的ではないだろうが、チベットで何が起きたか、あらためて世界に知らしめた。欧米ではチベット侵略の実情は、本作品ではじめて明らかになったというわけではなく、当初からよく知れわたっているという。
　ハラーはオーストリアの人で、あのアイガー北壁をはじめて完登した一流の登山家であり、ダライ・ラマの勉強相手をつとめたという数奇な体験の持ち主である。前半にものたりないところもあるけれど、ダライ・ラマの少年やラサの光景など、美しい場面も多く、やはり必見の映画ではないだろうか。
