   横溝正史の同名ミステリ小説を松竹映画の巨匠・野村芳太郎監督が映画化し、大ヒットを記録した超大作。東京に住む辰弥（萩原健一）は、自分を探していた祖父が目の前で毒殺死したことを機に、故郷の八つ墓村を訪れた。そこは戦国時代の落武者惨殺の伝説に彩られた地であり、やがてそこで謎の連続殺人事件が勃発する…。
   名探偵・金田一耕助には渥美清が扮しているが、ここでの彼は語り部に徹している。日本中の鍾乳洞をロケしてつなぎあわせた村の地下洞シーンや落武者惨殺、村人32人殺し、寺田家炎上などおどろおどろしい映像的見どころも多いが、それよりも大きな特色は謎解きミステリを超えて、怨念の実在を説く映画独自のストーリー展開。
   また、原作の舞台は戦後だったのを、映画では現代（1977年）に設定したことで、祟りという概念が今なお根強く人心に根付いていることを、より強く印象づけることにもなった。(的田也寸志）

5.0 out of 5 stars 非日常の世界へと誘われるカタルシス, 2006/8/26
この作品が30年近くたった今でも人気がある理由として、我々が故郷に帰省するような、ホッとする非日常空間の演出にあると思う。この原作自体、トリックの内容よりも、落武者伝説、双子の老婆、抜け穴だらけの鍾乳洞、主人公の恋愛、暗号、宝探し…と枚挙に暇ないほどの舞台装置に魅力があるため、常に日本人の好きなミステリーのトップ10に挙げられるのだろう。そしてこの映画は、トリック部分、謎解き部分を大幅に削り、原作では冒頭の数ページに過ぎない落武者伝説をもとにドラマを再構築している。しかも、設定を現代にしたところが、橋本脚本の真骨頂だ。当たり前の日常(大阪での美弥子の行動描写、鉄道・車を乗り継いで岡山の山奥に入っていく描写、金田一の旅の描写、弁護士事務所での会話　等々)をしつこいくらい綿密に書き込んでいるので、落武者の呪いという大ロマンが生きてくるのである。
観客は2時間半、日常を離れて八つ墓村という舞台を楽しむことになるが、何より素晴らしいのは「鍾乳洞」。胎内回帰をイメージするエロチックな空間の描写は、古今東西、この映画が一番である。
この映画を横溝作品の悪しき改変と言われる方もあるが、ここはむしろ、古めかしい原作設定と現代描写との相克を楽しみ、職人芸の映画作品を楽しもうではないか。

この映画は子供の時にテレビで見たのが最初です。その時は犯人探しよりも、怖くて怖くてその日からしばらくの間はトイレに一人で行くことができませんでした。そしてDVDで見直してみると因果応報の恐ろしさ、小川真由美とショーケンの愛、田舎に未だにあるはかりしえないしきたりなど興味深く見ることができました。小説とは時代背景、物語も違いますが映画のほうがお勧めです。落ち武者が惨殺される場面は決して一人で見ないでください…

この映画を観てから原作を読みました。はっきり言って、原作よりはるかに感動できます。
野村芳太郎監督の重厚な画面に、芥川也寸志の美しい音楽が重なり、文学的な雰囲気が漂います。
小川真由美と萩原健一が鍾乳洞の中を探索するシーンはあまりに美しく印象的です。
原作とは違って、犯人が殺人を繰り返していく理由が、金銭的な欲望に終わらないところがゾッとします。
加藤嘉の演技は必見！本当に死んでしまったか、と思ったくらいです。
