パティ・スミスは今からおよそ３０年前にデビューした。この「Horses」はそのデビューアルバムである。私はパティスミスのライブをニューヨークで三回見た（０５年の年越しライブにも行った）が、彼女の凄さは現役ばりばりである。彼女は、男女の性別や歌手や芸術家などといったあらゆる社会的区分けを取っ払ってしまう、「人間として」のエネルギーに満ちている。このHorsesはそんなパティのデビュー作であり、代表作で、３０年経った今、レッチリのベーシスト：フリーを加えたライブ演奏バージョンとの二枚組で“再発売”された。彼女はパンクの女王と謳われて入るが、彼女の歌をパンクと考えるにはあまりにも精巧で繊細すぎる。彼女はまた作家であり詩人、写真家であるがためその歌詞は文学的で、その点、知識人層にファンが数多くいる。彼女の歌い方も、まるで詩の朗読のような、映画俳優の独白のような雰囲気があるのだ。が、なんといっても最大の魅力は、そんなうんちくを軽く吹き飛ばしてしまうほどの、魂のこもったパフォーマンスである。見る者全ての心の底に、否応無しに強烈なエネルギーの塊を打ち付ける、彼女の歌は、３０年経った今、素直に凄まじい。「Horses」お勧めです。
