CD３枚組のお得盤です。ボーカル、ピアノ、インストゥルメンタルの
テーマ別に有名曲が入っています。いわゆるオリジナルをよく知っていても、アドリブ（これがジャズの最大の魅力ですが）に彩られたアレンジで違った感触があります。個人的にはバードランドの子守唄（サントリーウイスキー北杜CM曲、しかしこのアルバムでは歌手が違います）
に引かれて購入しました。しっとりした曲あり、ビッグバンドの賑やかなものあり、ジャズってこんな感じのものだと実感できます。

ジャズを聴き始めた方にオススメします。このステキなＣＤを聴いて、是非ジャズの世界の素晴らしい扉を開けてください。ジャズってこんなにいいものなのか、と痛感されると思います。

１枚目はジャズ・ヴォーカルの名曲のオン・パレードです。1939年収録のビリー・ホリディの「奇妙な果実」、スタン・ゲッツ＆ジョアン・ジルベルトの「イパネマの娘」、ルイ・アームストロングの「この素晴らしき世界」他、どの曲をとっても「これを聴かずしてジャズを語るなかれ」というべき定番の曲ばかりが収録されています。ご機嫌ですね。

２枚目は、ジャズ・ピアノばかりを集めています。エロール・ガーナーの「ミスティ」はもう半世紀以上前の録音ですが、今聴いてもオシャレで聞き惚れてしまいます。小曾根真の「ウィー・アー・オール・アローン」こそ、大人のジャズだ、という雰囲気を持っています。木住野佳子の「ダニー・ボーイ」の繊細なピアノを聴いて静かに音楽に浸ってください。ジャズ・ピアノの素晴らしさを良く理解していただけると思います。そして、ビル・エヴァンスのリリシズム溢れるピアノ・ソロは絶品です。その他の曲もいいですよ。

３枚目は、ジョン・コルトレーン、マイルス・ディヴィス、チャーリー・パーカー、アート・ファーマーの登場です。ジャズ界の巨匠ばかりですね。ほとんどのミュージシャンが鬼籍に入られましたが、その奏でられた音楽は永遠にリスナーに愛聴され続けています。

東芝ＥＭＩの「ジャズ・ベスト」シリーズの成功に刺激され、ユニバーサルからも、お得なボックスが出た。古いジャズから新しいジャズまで。ビバップからフージョンまで。ピアノトリオからビックバンドまで。ボサノバもあり。と、なにもかもの盛り合わせの「ビビンバ」状態のボックス。選定の基準やセンスも不明だが、音源の豊富なユニバーサルなので、いろんな曲、いろんなアーティストが入っている。この盤で好きになったミュージシャンの盤を買うのもよし。いわばジャズの入門編ボックス。お得でもあります。（松本敏之）
