   ミュージシャンのデビューは生涯最高の経験だとよく言われるが、たいていは2作目もすぐに発表される。前作の『The Red Shoes』から12年の歳月を経て、『Aerial』を発表したケイト・ブッシュは再び人生を復活させた。非常にまとまりのあるレコーディングで、ケイト・ブッシュがデビュー以来培ってきた唯一無比の世界を反映している。ディスク1のサブタイトルは“蜂蜜の海”で、個人的な夢想の連続だ。「King of the Mountain」では自由きままに有名人を瞑想し、エルヴィスと市民ケーンを参照して孤独を歌い、ピアノ・ヴォイスの習作「Mrs. Bartolozzi」ではそのコーラスが“ジャブジャブジャブ、汚れたシャツをきれいにしよう”と言う家事を歌ったものまで幅広い。デペッシュ・モードに影響されたシンセの曲、エレクトロのノリ、リリカルな流れの「King of the Mountain」はビンテージもののケイト・ブッシュならではのポップだ。だが、多くの歌はもっと壮大もので、ダイナミックな「Joanni」のようにジャンヌ・ダルクを歌ったものもある。ディスク2は“蜂蜜の空”と呼ばれ、ここで彼女は自分自身に浸りきっている。1日を鳥の飛行に変える暗喩を使い、人生のサイクルへの瞑想をまとめている。音楽的にも幅を広げ、鳥の歌、微妙なオーケストラ、ジャズ・トリオから曲を紡ぎ、最大限に実験を試みている。比較的最近、母になったこと、そして自分の母の死を包括した『Aerial』は深く個人的なアルバムで、ポップ・ミュージックの真のアイコン、そして驚異の声の持ち主の喜ぶべきカムバックである。（John Diliberto, Amazon.com）

内容的に、文句の付けようが無い、傑作です。
しかし、もし「ＳＯＮＹ／ＢＭＧ盤」が届いたら、要注意です。新聞にも小さく出ていた、「海賊盤コピー防止ソフト」が組み込まれているそうです。ＫＡＴＥのホームページに「お詫び」として記載されていました。ですから、パソコンで再生しないように、注意しましょう。ＵＫ盤、日本盤に比べ、廉価なので、購入したのですが、上記の盤が届きました。普通にＣＤプレーヤーで聴く分には、全く問題無く、装丁やブックレットも美麗ですから、また、Amazonさんの表記には、Toshiba emiとなっていますので、上記の盤では無いようですので。という事で、中古は気を付けましょう、という意味で星１つ減にしました。

12年ぶりだそうですが、やっぱり傑作でした。前作の「レッドシューズ」に入っていた「ラバーバンドガール」のような曲は一切なく、静かな曲が並ぶ。しかし、聴けば聴くほど味わいの出てくる曲が多い。80年代に出た「ハウンズ・オブ・ラブ」を思い出した。今回のアルバムからも「クラウドバスティング」のようないい曲が見つかると思う・・。
ジャケットも変わっていて、鳥の声のサウンドウェーブが日の出に照らされているという絵だ。オープニングはメロディアスな「キング・オブ・マウンテン」。続いて、歌詞に数字が羅列される「п」・・、ケイト・ワールド全開である。手にしてよかった~と思える盤である事に間違いない。

　家事をやり子供を育てながら、芸術家としても才能も涸れておらず、細切れの時間をじっくり重ねながら作られたアルバム。「ポップ」や「ロック」というジャンル区分とフォーマット化が行き渡ってからの若い世代の音楽とは全く違う自由な感性は健在である。年を取ると、庭に花が咲いたとか、美味しいご飯が作れたとか、そういう何気ないことで日常がキラキラするものだが、そういう悦びに溢れたアルバム。

　僕は80年代、中学生の時に音楽番組でガンガンかかってた「神秘の丘」にびっくりして以来の聴き手だが、実はそこから前の作品も後の作品もプログレっぽいというかシアトリカルな曲の構成が強烈すぎて、彼女のアルバムは「普段使い」の音楽にこれまでならなかった。（こう書くとなんか女性ファンに怒られそうだけど、普通の男子中高生のガサツでイライラした日常とは別世界だったという意味で。）

　今作では彼女の日常家庭生活の中でじっくり編まれたアルバムで（内ジャケは洗濯モノ！）、若い頃の才気走った狂気の味はない。楽器構成もピアノやバンド・セットがメインで、非常にシンプル。（もちろんじっくり聴くと相当凝ったことはやってるが。）そういう意味では彼女の円熟が楽曲の「普段使い」度を高めてくれており、週末の午前中に部屋に流しながらまったりするのに良かったりする。

　それにしても、A面（と敢えて呼ぶ）4曲目の「洗濯機の歌」が何でこんなにキレイなんだよ、と（笑）。普通の人と同じ日常生活を送っていても浮世離れしたこの感覚がステキ。
