かつて音楽評論家吉見佑子さんが中心となってこのアルバム「シングルマン」を再発売する運動があったことを知る人はどのくらいいるだろうか。契約の関係で正式にはクレジットされてないがホーンセクションはタワーオブパワーが参加していたり、ストリングスをニューヨークフィルがやっているこのアルバムはＲＣの東芝からポリドールへの移籍第一弾であったが大いに失敗した。ＲＣは長い沈黙を続ける。清志郎は井上陽水の化け物ヒットの「心もよう」のシングルＢ面に「帰れない二人」を提供したことで何とか印税で食いつないでいた時期である。
吉見さんは甲斐よしひろがパーソナリティーをしていたＮＨＫＦＭの「サウンドストリート」に出て
「今流行っているサザンのいとしのエリーよりもスローバラードだ」と言っていたことが記憶に今も残っている。

清志郎のニュースをきっかけに10数年ぶりに聞きなおしました。・・・表現に困るほど凄いアルバムです。30年以上も前の作品で、RCのメンバーだって若かったはずだけど、よくぞこれだけの作品を残したものだと・・・。確かに荒削りなところ、青臭いところはある。しかし、そうしたストレートな表現がある一方で、歌詞の深さだけではなく、清志郎のボーカルや曲のアレンジ、演奏、全体の仕上げ方など、あらゆる部分で『精神性の高さ』を感じます。それは単に年齢を重ねるだけでは形成されないもので、若くても、経験はまだ少なくても、自分や他者と率直に向かい合うことで生じる悩みや葛藤が醸成する『精神性の高さ』なのだと思います。

誰もやさしくなんかない
だからせめて
汚いまねはやめようじゃないか（アルバム3曲目『やさしさ』より）

30年前、高校生のときは何のことかよくわからなかったけど、とにかくインパクトのある歌詞でした。それはそこに本質的な何かを感じたからだと思います。そして大人になるにつれ、ことあるごとにこのフレーズが思い起こされ、年々歌詞の意味と実感が重なるようになりました。このアルバムは、刺激的な表現の、しかし本質に迫る歌詞が全編に散りばめられています。

最後に。『甲州街道はもう秋なのさ』からラストの『スローバラード』を続けて聴くと、まるで映画を一本観たような気分になります。それは、このうえなく上等な、珠玉の青春映画です。

理性を無くしてしまう。何にも通らずに、ハートへ直結してくる音楽がここにはある。
もちろん、学生の頃の思い出なんかが輪をかけている。だけど、それよりも濃い音楽がここにはある。

清志郎が吹き込んだテイクに、知らずにオーバーダブされていた。ストリングスが入っていた。ドラムが入っていた。だから、清志郎が目指した音楽じゃなかったのかもしれないけれど、アレンジャーの星勝さんが理解してくれていた。なんたってホーンは、たまたま来日していたタワー・オブ・パワー！
「スローバラード」は、このアルバムの最終曲だとたまらなくいい。「甲州街道はもう秋なのさ」の次に聴くと、たまらない。

間違ってもフォークではないし、ロックでもない。ソウルミュージックでもない。清志郎が、ＲＣサクセションが、濃すぎる。

最後に、リンコさんの弾くチェロ（ウッドベース）が大好きです。リンコさんがＲＣに深みを与えてます。
