　コルトレーンが真のコルトレーンとして世に認められることになった、アトランティック第1作目にして金字塔。コードを細分化してウネウネウネウネとソロが切れ目なく続く空前絶後の「シーツ・オヴ・サウンド」はここから始まった！しかも全曲オリジナルで、その大半が現在ではスタンダード化しているのも凄い。

惜しむらくは録音期間が長すぎて、サイドメンが入れ替わり、ほんの少しだが全体の統一感が損なわれている。特にシダー・ウォルトン（ｐ）とレックス・ハンフリーズ（ｄｓ）のボーナストラックの8、9、10に。
ですから、本作を出し直すたびになんとなくボーナストラックが入っているようですが、よほどのマニアおよび研究者でもない限り、オリジナルトラックだけで十分だと思います。
