【プロフィール】
1958年6月7日米国ミネアポリス生まれ。本名プリンス・ロジャー・ネルソン。独学で音楽を始め、10代半ばにしてギター、キーボード、ドラムス、ベースなどさまざまな楽器をマスター。78年に『フォー・ユー』でデビュー。セクシャルな歌詞と奇抜なファッション、独創性にあふれた音楽で脚光を集め、ブラック・コンテンポラリーの中心的存在となる。『ダーティ・マインド』(80年)あたりからの過度の肉体露出や性的表現から“異端のイメージが定着していった。主演映画『パープル・レイン』(84年)とそのサントラが空前の大ヒットを記録し、80年代最高の大スターに。その後も名作を次々と発表し、自らのレーベル、ペイズリー・パークやNPGレコードを設立。近年はインターネットで新作をリリースするなど新たなスタイルでの表現活動を展開。“20世紀最後のポップ・スターと呼ばれ、不動の人気を誇る。

サウンドトラックであります。この辺りからのプリンスに感じられるのは「寸止めの技術」のセンスの混乱・曖昧さです。それ以上やったら一般リスナーがポップスとして
楽しめない(趣味性が強い・ボトムが黒すぎる等）一線に楽曲を配置する技術に衰えがみられます。それは彼の低迷ではなくアレンジャー・プロデューサーとしての嗅覚のズレ
とも言えるでしょう。事実 [7]の重量ファンクにしてもデモの段階よりかなり薄めていますがかなり趣味性の強いフィニッシュであり、存在するもっとポップなバージョンを
お釈迦にしています。プリンスという記号には「楽曲の精錬・新しい価値の構築」の期待値が含まれています。どんなスタイルも素晴らしく出来るのは周知の事実であり、求められる
高いレベルに対する返答として本作はやや物足りない訳です。サントラという事でザ・タイムの曲も収められています。彼が過去にクビにしたジャム＆ルイスはこの９０年代初頭までに、
打ち込みFunkフレームの外皮交換による楽曲大量生産で大成功を収めています。ここで彼がミュージシャンシップを取り戻そうと号令をかけたくなるのも分かります。
しかし彼が種を蒔き花を咲かせた万人受けするシーケンサ・ビートはこの時すでにスネアの打ち込みを跳ねさせるスタイルに進化しチャートを席巻していました。前向きな取り組み
にも関わらず時代性とのズレを感じさせます。ここでコマーシャリズムと決別しても良かったのですが彼は真摯な態度で模索を続行していきます。いろいろなジャンルの音楽(特に過去の遺産)
を分け隔て無くよく聞くとプリンスの仕事・価値がより見えてきます。彼の音楽に向き合いその生産過程に含まれる研鑽を考える時、楽に生きる事を良しとしないその精神性に感服します。

映画のせいであまりいい印象の無いアルバムですが、曲はいいです。

某バスケット漫画(●ラム●ンク)で流●が自転車に乗りながらイヤホンで聴いていたっけ。
