どこの国のものでもロックの新作はかつての誰かの何かに似ているものだ。それは宿命だ。別にだからといってそのことを批難するのは浅はかだ。ロックは再生と解体や改訂を繰り返しそれでも逃れられぬ苦悶や歓喜や欲情のありかをあえて示さずにはいられぬ者とそれを受け止めて共鳴することで生き延びてゆく者たちの音楽だからだ。音のひとつひとつに捩り合わされた思いが軽くない。かといって重々しくない。濃度が高いのだ。アメリカ合衆国に生きていれば落ち込むのは当然だと思いながらそれを歌にする白々しさをウィルコは見事に乗り越えているうえ、くすぐったい叙情も切り捨てている。昨日見た夢を語る混沌の術を身につけている。ザ・バンドやグレイトフル・デッドの果たせなかった常におぼろげな現実感を明確に表現する、しかも幻想に逃避せず、ということにこの人たちは堂々と邁進している。2005年5月、地元シカゴでのステージの記録。ネルス・クラインがところどころで強力技を放つ。 (湯浅 学) --- 2006年01月号
