ブライアン・ウィルソンの新アルバムは、いつも祝い事を名目にしている。それがクリスマス・ミュージックのアルバムだったり、しかもそれは40年間で3度目のことだったりはしても。『What I Really Want for Christmas』（邦題『ホワット・アイ・リアリー・ウォント・フォー・クリスマス』）は、ウィルソンと、彼が『スマイル』（原題『Smile』）で共演した一流バンドをフィーチャーし、10曲のトラディショナルなクリスマスソングとザ・ビーチ・ボーイズの「Little Saint Nick」（邦題「リトル・セイント・ニック」）と「The Man With All the Toys」（邦題「マン・ウィズ・オール・ザ・トイズ」）の新バージョン、バーニン・トーピンとジミー・ウェッブの共作による2つのオリジナル曲を収録。レベル的には彼のベストワークとまではいかない（一番目立っているのは確かだ）が、タイトル曲と「Christmasey」（邦題「クリスマジー」）はウィルソンが今なおその気になれば人の気をひきつけるメロディーを生み出せることを証明したし、CD全体としても、彼のアレンジは独創性を失ったとはいえ昔のままの鋭い切れを見せている。『スマイル』同様、『What I Really Want for Christmas』も時にザ・ビーチ・ボーイズとの対比に苦しんでいる。ウィルソンはこれを「（いつもしていたように）一緒にキャロルを歌いたかった、愛する弟、カールとデニス」に捧げた。しかし、たとえば「O Holy Night」（邦題「オー・ホーリー・ナイト」）のような曲ではふと昔の情熱や気迫が光るのが感じられる。このジャンルのクラシックとして『クリスマス・アルバム』（原題『The Beach Boys' Christmas Album』）や『フィル・スペクター・クリスマス』（原題『A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector』）の隣に並べる価値はないかもしれないが、ウィルソンが子どもの頃から好きだった歌を歌っているのを聴くのは楽しい。こういう音楽が好みのひとには気に入られるアルバムだろう。（Benjamin Lukoff, Amazon.com）
