値段が安かったので買ってみましたが、正直非常に感動しました。
ゲイリー・クーパー演じるルー・ゲーリックの真面目な生き方、そして彼を常に温かい眼で見守る妻、両親、記者の姿など観ていてとても心の温まる作品でした。
クライマックスのヤンキースタジアムで行われた引退式の場面は、観ている私自身も涙がボロボロ流れてしまいました。500円で良い買い物をしたと思いました。

1942年米製作。NYヤンキース史上、最強の四番打者であるルー･ゲーリッグの半生を描いた伝記映画です。全編アメリカの良心に満ち溢れた古き良きハリウッド映画です。現実とどの程度、乖離があるのかは分かりませんが、ゲーリッグを演ずるゲイリー･クーパーが好演しています。妻･エレノア役のテレサ･ライトもいいです。新婚時代の夫婦のいちゃつきぶりっといったらもう…少し冗長になっていますが、のんびりと至福のときを見る側も浸るべきだと思います。夫婦愛を描いた作品と言ってもいいです。ベーブ･ルースも本人役で出演し、驚く程、好演しています。ウォルター･ブレナンも相変わらずの名演です。最後の引退セレモニーのシーンは、何度見ても感動します。画質も問題ないです。

この作品が1942年に制作されたことを知り驚く。太平洋戦争の真っ最中にアメリカ人はこんなすてきな映画を観ていたのか。
ゲーリー・クーパー主演。37歳で「筋萎縮性側索硬化症」で亡くなったアメリカ大リーガーの英雄、ルー・ゲーリックの物語。アメリカでは彼を慕い「ルー・ゲーリック病」と言っているそうである。つらいつらい病気がある。筋萎縮性側索硬化症。人柄のいい中年の男がなる。神経細胞が死滅していく。原因は不明。亡くなっていくまでの過程は戦いそのもの。
僕が師匠としていた患者さんは、労働者そのものだった。ある時から、自己の身体の不調を感じとった。「働き過ぎですよ」と僕は言った。某大学神経科の専門医に診てもらった。神経科医の厳密な診察法に驚嘆した。診断名は筋萎縮性側索硬化症であった。その後の、彼の生き様はすごかった。地元の有床診療所で療養。患者会をつくる。若い医師を鍛え続けた。治療法があるわけでなく、彼の神経細胞が死滅していく過程、それに対抗しょうとする努力。若い医師達は必死にかかわった。戦い続けて彼は永眠した。通夜の時、僕は泣いた。
「お前らチンピラにわしらが身体を診せてやっているからお前らは医者になれるんや」さらに彼は言い続けた。「イッチョ前になったら、わしらを見捨て町に出て行く」
叱られ続けた。生き続けんとする執念を教わった。
彼の言葉が聞こえる。「わしらがお前らに身体を診せてやっているから、お前らは医者になれるのだ」
