RICHARDの声はどうしょもないくらい悲しい。このライブでの彼のコンデションは決して良くない。声は掠れるし、歌詞も間違う。しかし、そんな事はどうでもいいと思えるぐらい心を掻きむしられる。ｸﾗﾌﾟﾄﾝが「唯一の天才」とまで言うこの男は明らかに圧倒的な魅力をもったシンガーだった・・・。彼の残した音源は全て聴きたいと切に願う。VHSででていたの「ライブ　イン　ｼﾞｬﾊﾟﾝ」での「YOU　DONT　KNOW　ME」はレイ　チャールズやヴァン　モリスンらのヴァージョンも比べ物にならないくらい悲しく、優しい名唱だった。他にもあるはず！聴きたい！！つーか聴かせろ！！！

1986.3.4 ツアー中のフロリダ州ウインターパークのホテルの一室で自ら命を断つ約半年前、1985.10.17　N.Y.州ウッドストックのクラブ、ゲイトウェイでのライブ録音。Homeと言っていいウッドストックのクラブ、リラックスしている様子が窺えます。ほとんどが Elp での弾き語り、何曲か　ジム　ウィダー（G）と　リック　ダンコ（B,VO）が参加している
このインフォメーションを見て、2002のDreamsville盤を取り出し、曲目をチェックしながら聴いてます。全曲、涙もの。特に　リック　ダンコとのDuet "I Shall Be Released" は感動的！　E. クラプトンが”彼の歌声を聴くたびに、髪の毛の先っぽまで震えるんだ”と言った、リチャード　マニュエルの魂の歌声を堪能して下さい。The Band の Sound を期待すると戸惑いがあるかもしれませんが、だんだん引き込まれ、聴き終わった時、思わず拍手をして、眼に涙が、、、

リチャードマニュエルがミュージシャンとして我々に伝えたかったことは一体何だったのだろうか。ザ・バンドでの彼のボーカル、ソングライティング、キーボードやドラムスでのプレイを聴くと、一つの像(かたち)が浮かび上がってくる。

控えめで他人を引き立てるファルセットによるコーラスワーク。愛情と優しさに溢れたリリカルなソングライティング。ザ・バンドの中間音を支えたリズミックで縁の下の力持ちのようなピアノ。歌心溢れるハートフルでユーモラスなドラムス。そしてなによりもあのソウルフルでメランコリックなボーカル。これらの中に共通しているものは、純情無垢でピュアーな精神だ。

ラストワルツでのリチャードはやつれて疲れているように見えた。彼のボーカルも何か苦しそうに聞こえた。ブードレッグ等の音源から聴き取れるザ・バンド後期の彼のイメージはいつもそんな感じだった。でもこのライブは少し違う、梅雨の中でのあるからっと晴れた一日といった趣だ。

彼のボーカルの調子は、はっきり言ってあまりよくない。だげどそれがどうしたと言える程にこの日のリチャードは楽しげだ。ザ・バンドという看板をはずして彼自身に戻ったのだろうか。ザ・バンド初期の飾りっけのないほのぼのとしたリチャードのイメージが重なってくる。

ザ・バンドの作品と較べると色々と粗が見えてくけれども、リチャードのボーカルやプレイに共感を覚える人は是非一度お聞きになってください。彼の人柄やフィロソフィー(レボンの自伝に書いてある)の一端がここに間違いなく記録されていると思います。
