７９年発表、クラッシュの名盤『ロンドン・コーリング』。
ロンドン・パンクの代表格としてデビュー当時から圧倒的な支持を得ていた彼らが、それまでのシンプルなパンク・ロックから一変して、様々な要素を含んだ一風変わった内容の作品を作り上げ、今なおファンの間で賛否両論となっているのが本作です。ジャケット写真はエルヴィス・プレスリーの１stのパロディ。文字の並びなど見比べれば一目瞭然ですが、今ではむしろこちらの方が有名なような気もします。

全１９曲、ＬＰ２枚にも及ぶ本作はレゲエ、ロカビリー、スカなど、まさに何でもアリの世界です。それは１曲目の表題曲から明らかで、ここにはこれまでのような疾走感はありません。ただ、サウンド的にはホーン・セクションが加わってはいるものの、基本的にはシンプルでストレートなロック・スタイルを貫いています。そのため、よく聴いてみると本作も紛れも無くクラッシュのアルバムだとわかるはずです。といっても、やはり１stのようなシンプルなパンクを期待すると面食らうのも事実なので、賛否両論になるのも頷けます。

名盤の中には１度聴いただけで全身に衝撃が走るタイプと、聴き込むうちに味が増して気付いたらハマッているタイプの２種類があると思います。１stが前者だとしたら、本作は後者に属します。もし、本作を聴いてイマイチだと感じたとしても、１度や２度だけ聴いて封印してしまうのではなく、根気良く何度も聴いてみて下さい。駄作か、名作か。本作の評価を決めるのは、それからでも遅くないと思います。

確かにいわゆるパンクロックを期待してこのアルバムを聴くんだったら
おそらく期待はずれで終わってしまうかもしれないし、そういう意味では
このアルバムよりはファーストアルバムなんかのほうがよっぽど上。

だけど、このアルバムの中身の素晴らしさって言うのは彼らがこの先
（きっと80年代を見据えた上でだと思うけど）自分達が進んで行く方向の音楽が
ぎゅっと詰まっているってことと一連のパンクバンドから抜け出そうとする彼らの
這い上がろうとする努力が見え隠れするところである。

一聴しただけではそりゃあたしかに節操もない（よく言えばバラエティに富んだ）
アルバムだけど、彼らの意志が聴き手にガンガン伝わってくるアルバム。
そして曲ごとに込められた彼らのスピリットは間違いなくパンクロック。
ジャケットだって２７年経った今でも超一級のカッコよさ。
それだけでも充分なんじゃないの？？

１ｓｔは、昔、イギリスで、７０年代を代表するロック･アルバムの１枚に選ばれました。まさにそのとおりでした。そして、２ｎｄは、なんか、ハード･ロックみたいぃ？！となりましたが、やはり良い作品でした。そして、登場したのがこの３ｒｄ「ロンドン・コーリング」。かっこいいジャケットは実はエルヴィス・プレスリーのアルバムのパロディー、内容もパンキッシュな曲だけでなく、ロックンロール、本格的なレゲエ、さらには、ジャジーな曲調のものまであるという、革新的な内容。これこそがパンク！と昔､興奮しました。そして、その後も今まで、ずっと、この「ロンドン･コーリング」はいつも私のベストの１枚です。
