７７年発表、クラッシュのデビュー作にしてロンドン・パンクの名盤『白い暴動』。
７６〜７７年頃というと、イーグルスが虚しさに溢れた『ホテル・カリフォルニア』を、スティーリー・ダンがＡＯＲの名盤『彩（エイジャ）』を発表するなど、ロックがよりポップに、或いはディープになっていった時期です（個人的にはそういった音楽の方が好きですが）。そんな中、ロックの原点とも言えるシンプルで攻撃的なパンクのサウンドが、当時の若者に圧倒的に支持されたのも納得できます。

音はシンプル極まりないもの。凝ったサウンド的演出は全くせず、ただ激しいビートに乗せて毒を吐く。曲自体も、カバー曲「ポリスとコソ泥」以外はどれも３分未満のものばかりで、全収録時間も３５分ほど。ギター兼ボーカルのジョー・ストラマーが「俺たちもデビューしたいが、まだ練習中だ」とラモーンズのジョーイ・ラモーンに語った際、ジョーイが「上手くなるまで待ってたら年寄りになっちまうぜ」とアドバイスしたとか。確かに、その言葉通り決してテクニカルとは言えないサウンドですが、これが意外と聴いていて気持ちイイ。

プログレとか凝った音楽を毎日聴いて、たまにこうゆうシンプルなロックを聴くと、何だか原点に返れる気がします。７０年代ロックを聴く人の中には、“パンクは嫌い”という人も結構多いと思います（私の父もそう）。そういう方の中には、ほとんど聴かずに“聴かず嫌い”になっている方も少なくないような気がします。実を言うと、私も最近までそうでしたが、聴いてみたら意外とカッコ良く、軽くハマリました（笑）。

パンクを愛する１０代のロック・ファンにはもちろんオススメの必聴盤ですが、“親父世代”も是非一度聴いてみてほしいアルバムです。

　ジギー･スターダストなどと同じように、７０年代を代表するベストの１枚として選ばれたクラッシュの１枚です。
　パンクと言ってもＵＳのと違い、ＵＫのパンクは、理論派と言うよりは、パブ･ロックから出てきたちょっとうさんくさいところのあるのが特徴。そこがまた良いのでもある。分かりやすいのである。クラッシュもパブのにおいでいっぱいです。
　ピストルズの１ｓｔが、オーヴァープロデュースなら、こちらは、スカスカです。「ひたすらうるさく」作られたピストルズもいいのですが、私はこのスカスカの音が大好きです。「ポリスと~」なんかすごいよね。これが白人のレゲエ！と言う感じ。スカスカだけれども、鋼鉄のような硬い音です。
　後にＰＩＬに行くキース･レヴィンも作曲にかんでいるし、裏ジャケットなんか全くインディーから出たの？と言う感じ。
　買って損は無い、と言うか、買わないと損する一枚です。

初めて聞いたのが、１７歳の頃。
確かI fought the lowがコピーしたかったから。

で、一発でパンクにはまった。
ロンドン・パンク初体験はピストルズでもジャムでもダムドでもなくクラッシュだった。

音もざっくりしていて、時代を超越していた。
タフで骨太なロックンロールという感じ。他のバンドよりも男気とかガッツを感じる。
歌詞が聞き取りにくいのが難ですが、とりあえず政府とアメリカとサッチャーへの怒りはよく分かる。

そういやピストルズは日本にも毒づいてましたね。
硬派なジョー・ストラマーに憧れた17歳の冬。

未完成だけどかっこいいとはこの事。
クラッシュを聞きたいなら、やはり１stから聞きましょう。
４ピースのパンク・サウンドは今聞いても、やっぱりかっこいいです。
リフもクールです。
