　Legend-「伝説」という大がかりな芸名も本作を聴けば納得の傑作だ。マックスウェル，ディアンジェロ，Musiqと，R&B界では何年かに1人，「才人」と呼ぶにふさわしい逸材が登場するが，ジョン・レジェンドもその1人と言えるだろう。ハスキーで味わい深いボーカルと，ジャジーなピアノを基調としながらもゴスペルからファンク，ヒップホップまで様々な要素を取り入れた幅広いスタイルが魅力だ。
白眉は，甘美な前奏曲に続いて始まる「Let’s Get Lifted」。流れるようにスムースでジャジーなピアノが紡ぎ出す美しくも切ないメロディー。まさに極上の一品だ。
カニエ・ウェストが参加した「Number One」は，ラップを交えながらもステイプル・シンガーズをサンプリングし，’70年代ソウルを彷彿とさせるようなハッピーなナンバーに。一方，「I Can Change」は，ジャジーなピアノとシリアスなホーンセクションの組み合わせが見事。ただ，ヒモだった過去を悔い改め，一人の女性を大切にすることを誓う・・・という内容でスヌープ・ドッグ参加というのが何とも皮肉ではあるが。
この他にも，メロディアスなピアノの弾き語りによるバラード「Ordinary People」，指を鳴らしてリズムを取りながら，家族全員で歌い上げるゴスペル・バラードの「It Don’t Have To Change」，メンフィス・ソウルを彷彿させる素朴で温もりのある「Stay With You」など佳曲が多い。
衝撃の，そして会心のR&Bアルバムだ。

ラジオでUsed to Love Uがヘビープレイされていて、衝撃を受けました。美声は世の中にたくさんいれど、ジョン・レジェンドの歌声は｢豊かさ｣があります。強烈に印象深い！という感じはないものの、いつまでたっても飽きる事がなさそうな楽曲ばかり！ソウルフルでＲ＆ＢっぽくてＨＩＰＨＯＰフレイバー。久々に“歌声”にヤられた一枚。

「オーガニック」＝「昔のスタイル」という認識は、誰もが無意識のうちにしてしまう、言わば条件反射的分類。選択の余地があるのなら、どの音を使おうが、ミュージシャンの勝手だろう、と僕などは思うのですが。７０年代のマイルスが、エレクトリックな音を選択したように。さて、どう頑張っても「カニエ・ウエスト」という固有名詞抜きには語れない、ジョン・レジェンド。彼もまた、いわゆる「オーガニック」な音作りをする一人。個人的にはグラミーを制覇した、カニエ氏のアルバムよりも、こちらの方が好み、ではある。それは単に歌が前面に出ているからなのだが、前面に出す為の、トラックの作りこみ方も半端ではない。それが行き過ぎると、嫌味になるのだが、すっきりとした品の良いアレンジで、割と長時間収録（国内盤は特に）であるにも関わらず、すんなりと聴くことが出来る。アルバム前半は、カニエ色が強いが、後半のシンガーソングライター然とした佇まいに、彼の本質があるように思う。
