【アーティストについて】
アメリカ一小さい州ロード・アイランド、プロヴィデンス出身の轟音ドラム＆ベース・デュオ（結成当初は、後にブラック・ダイスに加入するヒシャム・バルーチャを加えたトリオだった）、ライトニング・ボルト。ノンストップでひたすら叩きまくる、肉体の限界に挑戦しているかのようなブライアン・チッペンデイルの狂ったように疾走するドラムと、口の中に含んだマイクを使った呻きヴォーカル、ひずみまくり、ゆがみまくり、ライトハンド奏法も織り交ぜたブライアン・ギブソンの超高速ファズ・ベース──ルインズやボアダムス、メルツバウといった、いわゆるジャパノイズに大きな影響を受けたという、もはやカオティックという言葉さえも超越したかのようなそのサウンド??しかもダンサブルでさえあるのだ??は、サーストン・ムーアやジム・オルークら、多くのアーティストに高い評価を受け、本国アメリカ、ヨーロッパでは大きな話題となっている。

前作はまだゴリゴリに押していく感じだったけど今回はアルバムトータルで完成度がぐっと高まっている。
まず一曲目冒頭のメロに度肝を抜かれ、ゴリッとした骨太な曲になったかと思うと何時の間にかジャケのようなドロドロのサイケ天国に立ち尽くしている事に気付く。

独自のグルーヴ感を追求しているバンドだと思う。
ベース＆ドラムの二人組みだが、ＦＵＺＺのギンギンに利いた音での早弾きもあり、退屈さは感じさせない。
パンク的な雰囲気だが、技術は相当に高く、
独特の複雑な曲でも、高尚さや難しさは全くない。
テクノ等の打ち込みを通過した世代のドラミングで
ロックファンに限らず誰が聴いてもハイになれるようなリズム。
映像を見ると、本来ライブバンドなのではないかとも思ったが
スタジオアルバムの完成度も相当なもので、
衝動的なつくりのようだが、新しい領域を開拓しているような印象も受ける。

前作「wonderful rainbow」は正に極限まで高まり飽和したテンションの
爆発する恐るべき作品でした。正直あそこでストップかな、と思ってた
のですが彼らを侮っていたようです。
この「hypermagic mountain」は前作より一歩後に下がり、広大な視野を
得た印象を受けます。前々作の直線的な乗りと前作で生まれたポップな枠組み
が融合した集大成的作品で、今までで一番聴きやすいです。
嬉しさ、悲しみ、怒りといった感情は全く付随せず、「勢い」そのもの
が音で表現されたという感じ。ハイライトとなる7曲目は鳥肌立ちます。
芸術にとって最も大事なものは論理では説明の付かぬ未知数の存在だと
思います。子供の無邪気さや冷たく澄んだ空気を胸一杯吸い込んだ様な清涼感、
それでいて「垂れ流し的」でなく定まった視線。他の轟音系バンドとは
およそ一線も二線も画しているこのバンドは、そういう意味では芸術
の体現者と言える存在だと思います。最も彼らには「そんな大袈裟なもん
じゃねえよ」と言われそうですが。
ともかく、21世紀のエクストリーム・ミュージックの一つの到達点が
収められた作品であることは間違いありません。
