南少林寺を代表する英雄・方世玉と胡惠乾の仇討ちと壮絶な死闘を描いた作品です。
中国において人口に膾炙した悲劇の英雄を、復讐の連鎖のただ中に置いて悲劇性を強調した張徹らしい作品です。

この作品が変わっているのは、いきなり決闘シーンから始まるところです。血で血を洗う死闘の合間に、走馬燈のように過去の記憶が蘇っていきます。この決闘と回想が交互に展開するのが持ち味といえましょう。

兄弟の絆、父母の仇討ち。
復讐がまた復讐を呼び、英雄たちはそこから逃れられない運命を悟って愕然とします。
「相手も気付いていない。これは政府がおれたちを共食いさせて滅ぼそうとしていることを……」
わかったところで死地に赴くほかない英雄の顔は、死相と嘆きにいろどられています。
ところどころにちりばめられた死の予感が一歩一歩現実に近づく悲劇性。方世玉と胡惠乾を演じるふたりが若く生き生きとしているからこそそれが際だちます。

また今回特筆すべきは『キルビル』でおなじみの白眉（パイメイ）が出ていること。虎視眈々としておりますが、最後の最後で見せ場をかっさらうので注目していてください。

タイトルに『続・〜』とはついているものの、『嵐を呼ぶドラゴン』とは内容的に全くの別物であり、『嵐を〜』を見ていなくとも心配はない。

とにかく目を引くのは、壮絶なクンフーアクションの連打、連打、また連打！！　まさに息つく間も与えぬ電撃の死闘が展開され、チャン・チェ監督お得意の残虐趣味全開な演出と相まって、見る者を否応なしに興奮させる作品である。

しかし、血塗られた復讐と因果応報の破滅に彩られたストーリーは、重く暗い。完成度の高い殺陣も話の陰惨さを加速させ、映画全体はカタルシスのカケラもない、殺伐とした仕上がりになっている。ここには『嵐を呼ぶドラゴン』のような爽快感や、『少林寺列伝』のアットホームな雰囲気は皆無だ。

観賞の際は覚悟してほしい。これぞ“鬱”クンフー映画。
