　ブルース・リー世代の方には説明の必要のないほど有名な空手マンガのＴＶアニメ化作品だ。

原作はアメリカのコロシアムで重量級の猛牛と闘い、観客の目の前で素手で勝利を収め「ゴッドハンド」の異名を取る場面から始っていたが、本作品では日本軍最後の切り札「神風特攻隊」の一機がエンジントラブルにより出撃できず、辛くも生き残る場面から始る。
その生き残りこそ、主人公の飛鳥拳だ。

仲間は全て戦死し、一人生き残ったことに負い目を背負った飛鳥はアメリカ軍の支配下に置かれた祖国日本の現状を目の当たりにし、絶望の淵に立たされるが、空手でアメリカ兵から少女を救ったことから空手に希望を見出す。
やがて暴力団の用心棒に身を落とす。

ある日「宮本武蔵」の本と出合い感化され、昭和の武蔵として生きる道を志す。
だが、それは苦難の道そのものだった。
全日本空手選手権で優勝したものの、彼の激しい空手は理解されず空手界から追放され、孤立してしまう。
だが彼を理解する唯一の少年、有明省吾との友情にも似た師弟関係を得ることによって救われる。

初期のあらすじはこんなものだが、作品があまりに偉大過ぎて私の文章力では、その半分もお伝えすることは不可能である。

故・大山倍達氏の半生を描いた同名の漫画を単にアニメ化したのではなく、内容を分かり易く、毎回空手の見せ場を作る様にうまく脚色されています。
アニメ版は終戦直前から始まり、BOX1ではアメリカ遠征し、トッド若松の元でプロレスラーとの死闘を繰り返す中、最大のピンチを迎える「ザ・エクスキュースナー」戦までを収録しています。
漫画初期のつのだじろう氏の絵柄と、東京ムービーの作画がマッチし、違和感のない絵に仕上がっているのも良いです。
また、壮絶な死を遂げる有明省吾の声を、デビュー間もない神谷明氏が演じているのも見所ですね。
尚、主人公の名前が「飛鳥拳」となっているのは、大山倍達氏本人の希望からなのか、定かではありません。
