Talking Headsの30周年を記念して、彼ららしいアートなスタイルで、一時代をつくりあげた彼らの8枚のアルバムの音質をアップ・グレードして、2枚のCDにまとめたものが、これだ。バンドの曲名を白のプラスティックのCDケースにエンボスしているのがなかなか意味深でいい。ディスクは2枚ともアルバム達からの完璧な選曲が並び、しかもボーナス・カットがついている。全てハイ・レゾリューション・ステレオでリマスターされ、曲にあわせてのDVD付き、これも5.1サラウンド・サウンドにミックスされており、全ての音質向上は、ドラムスのジェリー.ハリソンのよってパーソナルに監修されている。もちろん、以上のオーディオ面での質的向上は、今回のアルバムをより魅力的なものにしていることは確かだが、やっぱりファンとして嬉しいのはボーナス曲(バラエティにとんだB面と、未発表もの)だし、ビデオ(初めて発表するレアなライブ・クリップが沢山)である。ボーナス曲としては、4曲のリズムのいい、しかし最後まで演奏されなかったRemain in Lightのアウトテーク(そのうち1曲はこのバンドのエンブレム的Once in a Lifetimeに発展を遂げている)があり、Enoの革新的な制作テクニックをちらりと覗かせるものになっている。また、アルバムFear of MusicのCities、Life During WartimeやMindの別バージョンや、アルバムMore Songs About.のThank You For Sending Me an Angelのカントリー・バージョンもある。Speaking in Tongueに収録のBurning Down the Houseの奇妙なまでにミュートされている初期バージョンもある。Little Creatures収録のAnd She Wasの初期のデモは、この世の全ての栄光あるポップソングというのは、簡単に言えばこの曲のシンプルな一節に集約されるということを表しているように思える。ビジュアル面でのボーナス分(特に初期の生のパフォーマンスのクリップ)は、ヘッズのベストヒットに趣を添えているが、呼び物にしては妥協を感じる。Remain in LightのOnce in a Lifetimeも含めて、全ての曲にクリップがついているわけではないのだ。とはいうものの、新発見のお宝満載であるし、音質なども驚く程に向上されているし、このバンドの輝かしい軌跡をたどるには、なかなか魅力的なベストヒットに仕上がっている。

Formed in the mid-70's by art school chums David Byrne, Chris Franz, and Tina Weymouth-and ex-Modern lover Jerry Harrison-Talking Heads rose out of the CBGB punk crucible and proved themselves one of the most artistically adventurous and influential bands ever. Their visionary, polyrhyhmic sound fused elements including rock, funk, and punk with diverse world beats, avant-garde minimalism, and pure pop genius. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, the band and their groundbreaking repertoire are celebrated in Rhino's deluxe DualDisc upgrade of their catalog. Now their critically praised recordings can be reexperienced as never before, with new DVD-A Surround mixes personally supervised by Jerry Harrison.

DVD サイドはリージョンフリーになっている(R=0)ので日本国内の普通の装置で再生できます。
Bad point.
CD サイドはCD-DA規格に準拠していないので、私のPowerBook G4のドライブ（松下DVD-R UJ-825）では再生できませんでした。

DualDisc 自体、単純にCD（のようなもので再生保証なし）とDVDを張り合わせたようなもので、盤自体は厚さが二倍で薄型ドライブには負担を掛けるし省資源になるわけでもないし存在理由が判りません。DVD面（5.1chとDolby stereo）を聴く分にはリミックスの効果は凄まじく、これまでのCDが聴くに堪えなかったSpeaking in Tongues（なぜかRemain in Light より音が悪かった）も聴けるようになっています。

結論：どうしても今聴きたいなら、手持ちの機材で再生できないかもしれないと覚悟して買う事。つまり同じ内容で通常のCD-DAとDVDの二枚組 Two-far パッケージになって出るのを待つのが吉。DualDisc は狂気の沙汰。

追記：英国では初期の四枚についてCD-DAとDVDの二枚組パッケージが出ています。これらはPBG4での再生も問題ありません。リージョンコードは0 (zero: all region) です。カタログ番号は

スタジオレコードアルバム８枚を DualDisc で収録。
アルバム毎に cd と dvd が表と裏に張り合わさったような形(DualDisc)で収録されています。
従ってディスク総数は８枚になります。
それぞれのディスクは一般的なものより厚みがあるため、
読み込むドライブの種類によっては不具合があるかもしれません。
実際私の ibook(G4.スロットローディング)ではディスクの出し入れがおぼつかなく、
案の定ディスクに傷がついてしまいました(買ったばかりなのに...)。

一応収録されているアルバムのタイトルを挙げておきます。
Naked, True stories, Little creatures, Speaking in tongues,
Remain in light, Fear of Music, More songs about buildings and food,
Talking head:77.

まだ "TALKING HEADS:77" しか見ていませんが、少々内容を。
dvd は cd の内容を5.1Ch化したものが入っており、静止画像をバックに再生します。
Mixは Jerry Harrison. それぞれのディスクに movie, photo, Bounus Truck がつきます。
音質、初出音源については...音楽雑誌でも参考にしてください。

dualdiscなので星-2個。
よって星２つ

ネガティブなレビューが多かったので購入を躊躇しましたが、ようやく購入に踏み切り実際に再生してみるとこれまでの心配が杞憂でした。小生の廉価版DVD/CDプレーヤー（５年以上前に購入、１万円以下）でもCDサイド、DVDサイドとも全く問題なく再生できました。
特筆すべきはリマスターの質です。CDサイドは通常盤と比較して飛躍的に音質がクリアーになっております。また、CD内容を５．１サラウンドで再生できるDVDサイドは、もしサラウンドシステム利用可能な環境で聞くことができるならば、さらにお勧めしたくなるような音の立体感が楽しめます。小生のただ一つの苦情は、ボックスセットにするなら、セットを包括的に解説する資料を充実させてほしかった！という点のみです。各CDにはライナーがありますが、「トーキングヘッドの軌跡」のような解説を多少期待していたものの、ほぼ皆無でした。
ま、しかし、それを差し引いても購入して本当によかった、と感じた買い物でした。
