   フィオナ・アップルはふさぎがちで、賢い女性、そして第1級のアーティストで、禁断の深みまで分け入ることのできる歌手だが、ゴシップを終わりにした3枚目のCDを、浮かれ騒ぎで始めている。アルバム・タイトル曲はジョン・ブリオンがプロデュースした2曲のうちのひとつ。ヒップホップのプロデューサー、マイク・エリゾンド（50セント、エミネム）を無理に参加させたレーベルの争い前の曲で、ジュディ・ガーランドの曲に皮肉を加えたような、ルーファス・ウェインライトが手を貸したような雰囲気であり、ストリングスが鳴り、移り気なビートが響き、梯子が必要な曲となっている。だが、遊び心満載でありながら、コーラスが突入してくる頃には、何故世界がフィオナ・アップルの不在を寂しがっていたかが明確に理解できる。

まず、内容に関しては、ノラ・ジョーンズの大成功以降、レコード会社は女性シンガーを癒し系として売り出そうとしがちなのですが、フィオナは、人生の光と陰のうち、陰のほうを表現する女性シンガー／ソングライター／ピアニストなのだと言えます。〈魂の癒し〉というより〈魂の叫び〉。とても内省的。これでもかこれでもか、と痛みを訴えている観のあるこれまでの作品よりも、平穏、成熟。
嘘か真か、椎名林檎がこのフィオナの“アップル”にあやかって“林檎”と自称しているというのは、有名な話です。でも、林檎とアップルとはかなり違いますね。『ミュージック・マガジン』2005年12月号のインタヴューで、エイミー・マンがフィオナを絶賛していましたので、エイミーのことが好きな人はフィオナのことも好きになるでしょう。
そして、商品の仕様について。歌詞はついています。それから、DVDサイドのリージョナル・コードはフリー。再生方式については、日本国内に出回っているデュアルディスク盤のうち、UK盤はPALなのに対して、このUS盤はNTSC。ということで、日本製のプレーヤーでもごらんになれます。ただし、もちろん英語の字幕はなし。時間は約30分。
DVDの内容は、まず、全曲のオーディオ。次に、ミュージック・ヴィデオが1本。そのあと、薄暗くこじんまりしたライヴ・ハウスの雰囲気のなかで撮影されたライヴが5曲分。簡素なアコースティック・アレンジなので、表現力豊かなフィオナの歌唱が味わえます。ライトはフィオナを照らすのみ。最後に、所変わって、ピアノ弾き語りライヴが1曲。
あと、問題は、裏ジャケット、ステッカーが警告しているように、オーディオ面がCDの設計書に一致していないので、CDプレーヤー、DVDプレーヤーのなかには再生できないものもありうる、ということでしょう。

「dual disc」ということで、一枚のディスクの片面がＣＤ、もう一方の面がDVDになっています。
DVDの側には、ＣＤ面に入っている曲がまるごと収められているだけでなく、
PV１曲とアコースティックライブ6曲、合計で30分弱の映像が収められています。

　ライブ映像はカメラワークに凝っているというわけではないですが、
親密な雰囲気のライブハウスで唄うフィオナ・アップルを観ることが出来ます。

　本編の楽曲ももちろん素晴らしいです。
　強い自我を持つ一人の女性の世界との葛藤や、恋愛の終わりを唄った
パーソナルな内容の歌詞を持つ唄がこれほど多くの人の心に響くのは
小さな奇蹟のような気すらしてしまいます。

久々に聴いたFionaのピアノにまずにっこりしてしまいました。あの独特の低くうねるような、波打つような力強い旋律です。そして心の奥に浸み込んでくるあの声、健在です。
冒頭のタイトル曲、ちょっとアンティークなアコースティックな作りにアレッ？と思いましたが、２曲目からはどっぷりと前作を踏襲した重いリズムと独特のFiona節。そうか前作からもう５年、次作を期待しながら時間がずいぶん流れました。といっても流行モノとは無関係の音作りと彼女の力強さには再び脱帽、期待を裏切ることの無い充実した作品と思います。これまた飽きずに当分聴き続けることになりそうです。
本作ではDVDで彼女の映像も何曲かみることができます。アコースティックなバックで歌っているライブが中心ですが、個人的にはミディアムで重いリズムとうねりのある音をバックに歌われる作品により魅力を感じているため、あくまでオマケと思っています。
