リバティーンズ崩壊の元凶にしてトラブル・メイカー、ピート・ドハーティが結成した新バンドのデビュー作。引き続きミック・ジョーンズのプロデュースによる本作は、音を作り込みすぎずにバンドの生の姿を捉えるという手法はこれまで同様だが、印象が異なるのは楽曲の幅が大きく拡がり、多彩なアレンジで聴かせてくれるからだろう。たとえばピートの恋人でモデルのケイト・モスとのデュエットが話題のラウンジ・ジャズ風な(1)、これまで以上にレゲエ/スカ色が濃厚な(6)(10)(11)、従来の流れを汲むポップ&パンキッシュな(2)(7)、新機軸とも言えるアシッド・フォーク調の(12)(15)など、リバティーンズのメンバーへの愛憎入り交じった思いや、気ままなトリップの記憶が各曲に刻まれている。自ら「クラックを止めろ」と(5)で歌いながら、まだ止められないらしいピート。彼の楽曲が放つ刹那の煌めきはたしかに魅力的だが、それとドラッグとは無関係だし、過度の摂取はその才能をも殺すことに早く気付くべきだろう。 (保科好宏) --- 2005年12月号

パンク、スカ、レゲエ、フォークと色んな音が詰まってて、リバのような音源を想像していた者としては、ピーターがまだこんなに表現方法を持っていたということに驚かされました。
歌詞は相変わらずカールに向けたものが多いですが、第三者としてドラッグをやめろと自分に言い聞かせるものなどもあり、彼の葛藤が垣間見れます。
最初は否定的に聴いていましたが、これほどのものを聴かされると、ピーターの才能を無視せざる得ないです。

ピートがリバティーンズにいたとき、来日公演を見に行ったが、ものすごい存在感で、あぁこういう人が音楽に選ばれた人なんだと感じました。それはオアシスのリアムを初めてライブで見たときと同じ感覚でした。さてこのアルバムですが、個人的には星5つですが、誰かに勧めるとなると星3つです。なぜなら薬中が薬金欲しさに作ったアルバムにも聞こえるので。Ｖｏもただぼそぼそつぶやくだけって感じです。しかしこんなアルバムはピート以外には作れません。詞は彼の半生を、また今彼が感じている気持ちを素直に表現したあまりにも赤裸々な詞です。曲もメロディがどれも切なくていいです。まるでこのアルバムはピートが誰か感動させてやろうとか、世の中を変えてやろうとか意図的に曲を作ったのではなく、ただただ自然発生的に生まれてきたもの、又は、幼子が母を求めて泣き喚くぐらい必然なものだったのかもしれない。そのくらい素直なアルバムです。音楽が好きで音楽がないと生きていけない人は是非聴いてください。そこにはギターとノートを持って中世の世の中を歩くまるで吟遊詩人のようなピートの姿か見えるような気がします。

リバティーンズのアルバムも好きですがこのアルバムを聴いてぼくにとってのリバティーンズはピートだったんだなぁと思いました。ブリティッシュ・ロマン。エレガントってこういうことなのか？と思ってしまいます。よい作品に必ずある言葉にできない魅力がこの作品にはありますよ。音は当然リバティーンズに似ていますが、聴いて浸る気分は初期ベルセバに近いです。シャリシャリ鳴るギターの細い音が刹那の結晶のようでたまりません。思春期の男子にはこれを聞きながら通学して欲しい。朝の空気にも不思議とマッチします。
