4.0 out of 5 stars “王道”と取るか“マンネリ”と取るか…, 2008/8/13
lee morganの65年に録音された作品で、wayne shorterとの２管。ピアノはharold mabernが担う。尚、ジャケットはreid milesの手によるものではないのがひと目ですぐに判ります。

これは当時のmorganにしてもshorterにしても、けっして何か新しい試みを刻んだ１枚とはなっておらず、基本的にリフの上で各プレイヤーがひたすらにソロを取るという、フォーム自体はしごく凡庸なものに終始している。

…のだけれど、この盤に独特の魅力は所々に確かにある。
楽曲がいわゆる一発モノであるため、逆にshorterの暴力的とさえいえる強靭なソロが浮き彫りされている。morganもとりたてて目新しさのないものの、どれも彼らしいキレのあるアドリブが聴けるのが何より良かった。この時代のmorganのソロにはすでにムラがあるので、このような演奏に出合えるのが単純に嬉しい。それとマイナー調の楽曲が格別素晴らしい点も特筆したい。“ジゴロ”のテーマにはいつもグッと来る。“モーガンスタイル”ど真ん中と言うべき哀愁と情緒。力強さ。morganを好きな方はこういう“王道”を求めているはず。この王道と言う言葉はmorganとよく合う。

１点残念なのがリズムのbilly higgins。求心力に乏しい淡々としたドラミングを聴いていると、残念ながら催眠効果とは逆の結果をもらしている。ほとんど苛々させられる箇所が散見されます…。
