アヴァンギャルド・ジャズの最初の大きな波が収まりかけた1965年にレコーディングされた『Unity』（邦題『ユニティ』）は、オルガン奏者のラリー・ヤングのブルーノート・デビュー、『イントゥ・サムシン』（原題『Into Somethin’』）が先にぼんやりと表現していたものをはっきり立証するアルバムとなった。ヤングはブルーノート移籍前はジミー・スミスの愛弟子だったが、のちにフュージョンに完全に傾倒し、やがてトニー・ウィリアムス・ライフタイムに加わり、ぴったりのタイトルのデビューアルバム、『エマージェンシー!』（原題『Emergency』）に参加した。だが今回のアルバムで、ヤングは実験的グルーヴに情熱を傾け、ある部分ではハモンドB3オルガンの伝統的演奏を糧とし、別の部分ではドキドキさせるリズミックな展開を自分のものとして、セシル・テイラーや他の奏者からも手法を盗んでいる。とはいえ、曲は常に安定したテンポを保ち、ジョー・ヘンダーソンや若きウッディ・ショウの思慮深くタイトなソロもある。ドラムのエルヴィン・ジョーンズはこのカルテットにパワーを与え、音楽は、一番印象的なのはヤングの自由自在なオルガンではあるが、崩壊した脱構築と建築学的に複雑なソロ、そしてメロディーの主張とともに流れていく。何より、このレコーディングはB3オルガンが新種のジャズメンにとっていかに大切なものであるかを明らかにした。ルディ・ヴァン・ゲルダーによるリマスターでサウンドが向上し、音質は明るくなり、低音部も強化されている。また、すばらしい2枚の写真と新しいライナーノーツも追加された。（Andrew Bartlett, Amazon.com）

オルガンでモードＪＡＺＺ・・・って、想像つきますか？
つかないでしょう。。。

「へぇ〜〜〜〜〜〜っ」と思いますよ。

ＪazzＯｒｇａｎ＝ジミー・スミス・スタイルではなぃっ！

「百聞は一見にしかず」とは、まさしくコレ！
とりあえず、聴くべし！

PS:ウッディ・ショーもがんばっとります。

　ヤング、ジョー・ヘンダーソン、ウディ・ショウ、エルヴィン・ジョーンズ。何という凄いメンバーでしょうか。ショウなんてまだ20歳そこそこなのに、尖がったソロを突きまくってます。ヘンダーソンは「Softly~」でのソロが最高ですね。ラストの曲では全員が燃え上がっています。オルガンでモード・ジャズを追求したヤングの一頂点といえるでしょう。

Woody Shaw、Joe Hendersonの２管、Elvin Jones、そしてLarry Youngのオルガンというかなり強力な編成。
Larry Youngのモーダルな雰囲気も良いけど、特に僕の大好きなWoody Shawの活躍が嬉しい作品。３曲のオリジナルの出来が良いのと、若いのに哀愁のある、且つ男臭い硬派なtpは魅力的。
60年代を本当の意味で代表する（だっていかにも60年代風なんですもの）オルガン・モードジャズのプチ名盤。
