演奏を巨匠で例えるとするなら、グリュミオーの様な演奏をする。
だが若干、技術力は見劣りする。
が、それを表現力でカバーしている。
今日、数多くの演奏家がパガニーニのカプリースを録音しているが、
その中では、並の演奏だと思う。差し詰め中の上と言った所だろうか・・・

演奏時は、より技術力を全面に押し出すか、それとも表現力を押し出すかに大別されると思う。
彼は、どちらかと言うと後者である。
ハッキリ言って、好みが分かれる演奏である。


比べては失礼かもしれないが、
私の場合は、アッカルドの方が断然素晴しく聴こえる。

カプリースに詩的センスを求める人には、ウケるかもしれない。


彼の演奏した"God save the king"を聴いても分かるように、
アッカルドなどと比べると技術が譜面に追いついておらず、彼はパガニーニの演奏には向いていない。
どちらかというと彼はモーツアルトなどの演奏の方が断然素晴しい。

私の内ではアッカルドの神話が一瞬にして塗り変えられた。最終楽章はまるでレクイエムのように感じた。曲が終わったかと思うほどの静寂を奏でたかと思うと、いきなり竜巻のようなパッセージ。なんと詩的に、大胆に描かれているのだろう。若き日の美しきパガニーニの姿か。私はこの奇想曲では音程のふらつきを感じない。ヴァイオリンの素晴らしさとは、12音に束縛されることなく自由に奏者が音程を描けるところだ。そういった意味では8、12、15番などの楽奏の素晴らしさも鮮明に感じる。24番のフィナーレの連譜に、和音を加えた余裕のパッセージは、パカニーニのオリジナルの譜に従ったものなのだろうか。これほど贅沢なパガニーニを描けるのは、パガニーニの再来と呼ばれるリッチやアッカルドのお陰だろう。バッハの無伴奏ヴァイオリンが旧約聖書ならば、奇想曲はまさしく新約聖書だ。

　このディスクが日本で発売されたのは１９８５年、当時ツィンマーマンは１９歳だった。ライナーノーツにおける彼の談によると「モーツァルトのようにこの曲を弾きたかった」とのことで、まことに清新で見事な演奏が、きかれる。
　このディスクのみならず、彼の録音した５大ヴァイオリン協奏曲はいずれも、すばらしい。メンデルスゾーンだけは入手がやや困難かもしれない。ブラームスは輸入盤で購入できるし、いっそサヴァリッシュの「ブラームス交響曲、協奏曲集」という７枚組のセットをもとめるという手もある。値段もそれほど高くないし、ファーストチョイスにもセカンドチョイスにもおすすめできる良いセットだ。（Brahms,Sawallisch）でヒットする。あとの協奏曲は有り難いことに国内盤１３００円でもとめることができる。

　わたしがこのヴァイオリニストを高く評価するのは、その「安心感」からだ。卓越した技巧が空転することなくしっかりした音楽をつくっている。昨今のすぐれたヴァイオリニストにはなにかしら「触れなば切れん」といった鋭さがあって、自分にひきつけたところで演奏をしている。そうしたディスクをきくのもスリリングで楽しい体験なのだが、トシのせいか試験を受けたあとのような疲れを感じることがある。

　ツィンマーマンはそういうタイプではない。「おのれの欲するところに従って規を超えず」とでも評するべき美徳があって、それぞれのディスクをききおわって感じるのは「ああ、偉大な作曲家の偉大な作品をたっぷりきいた」という満足感だ。シベリウスはシベリウスとして素晴らしく、チャイコフスキーはチャイコフスキーとして、素晴らしい。ベートーヴェンも、もちろん、そうだ。「そういうききかたをしたいのなら往年の名手をきけばよいではないか」と仰有るかもしれないが、往年の名手ならば皆そういう演奏をしているとはかぎらないのである。

　わたしと同じく貧乏な方にとっても、１枚また１枚ともとめてきいて、決して損をすることはないヴァイオリニストだと思います。つよく推します。
