60s初頭のデビューから約10年後、自ら"ジャズ"の冠を外す事でより広いフィールドに対する作品作りに動き出した"クルセイダーズ"の1st。何よりもアナログ2枚組というボリュームを1stに持ってきたのは溢れんばかりの創造意欲の表れであったのかも知れません。
80s直前の"ストリート・ライフ"も名作だと思いますし、70s中期から後期にかけてのGreatなクルセイダーズ(って勝手に呼んでいますが(^^;)の作品群、特に"南から来た十字軍"辺り、も極めつけのクルセイダーズだったと思います。
しかし、本作から溢れてくる音の多くはまだまだ土の匂いが漂ってくる(出自の)テキサス・ジャズ・ファンク的なノリが色濃いものです。とは言え、既に"聴かせ方"を心得ている強者の手練手管は流石の一言。
ボリュームがある分、一気に聴き通すのはちょっとしんどいかも知れませんが、後年には見られないストレートなファンキーさは(その辺りを好物としている方には)かなり気持ちいいハズです(^^;
[1]でのW.フェルダー(ts)のフリーキーなトーンが炸裂し、C.キング作の[2]ではL.カールトン(g)がクリーンなトーンでの長尺ソロをたっぷり味わえます。また、"えっ、これJ.サンプル作?"と思わず口に出してしまいそうな程"もっさり"した(^^;[3](決して貶していない事はお判り戴けますよね?)など、発見の宝庫でもあります。
ジャズと言うよりブルース、R&B臭が濃密な作品となりますが、スルセイダーズ自身が新たに(と言うか、改めて)目指した方向性と音楽は充分にリスナーに伝わるものだと思います。
サポートメンバーとして、後年公式にメンバーとなるL.カールトンを始め、デビッドT.ウォーカー(g)、C.レイニー(b)などが参加しています。
