ショパンのバラード全曲と舟歌が収録されていて、おなかいっぱいになる（満足できる）内容だ。録音の質は非常に良く、SACDにしていることからも小山さんのこだわりと自信が窺える。

もちろん演奏も良い。これなら誰でも満足できるはず。悪いところを突っ込む隙がない。小山さんが出したCDの中で、ベスト盤になるのではないだろうか。

無駄な音は一音もない。すべての音に意味がある。
という言葉を思い起こさせる名演である。
ダイナミックであり、かつ繊細な部分を見せることを忘れない演奏。完璧な技巧であるが、それを一切見せつけない余裕と意欲。

バラードではその自由奔放に紡ぎだされる音が時に激しく、時に繊細に、その両方を見事に両立させ、しかもバランスがとれている。1番のダイナミックさは圧倒的。4番の出だしは夢の中をさまようような、ショパンの晩年を感じさせる貫禄の名演である。
後半のマズルカと前奏曲はバラードと舟歌の中継ぎにピッタリでセンスが感じられる。舟歌は極めつけの録音といえよう。
