　最初に聴いて唖然、二度目に聴いて興奮、三度目には喜びと当時の観客に嫉妬さえおぼえる傑作ライブ。MCの紹介"Mr.Soul"そのものの比類なきソウルフルな内容だ。白人向け音楽市場を意識した抜群に上手いが無難なスタジオ作と比べると、ここでは端正で非の打ち所のない歌唱技巧に加えて、豪快な声量と少し割れた声がいい意味での野性味になって黒い迫力満点である。そしてコンサートにおいて自ら演者であると同時に、バック演奏と聴衆を完全に掌握仕切った指揮者のようなここでの彼。教会音楽の説教にも似たパフォーマンスからゴスペル音楽の影響が極めてよくわかると同時に、ポピュラー音楽のライブ演奏をも完璧にこなした稀有なアーティストである事を思い知らされる。

　彼の歌が素晴らしいのは勿論だが、観客のレベルの高さも特筆もの。3,5,8,10はサムと観客の共演があってこその興奮と感動である。5前半、客席に語りかけながらシャララララと鼻歌を交えたロマンティックさは｢さえずる小鳥｣の様だし、後半、観客の合唱を聴いているとまさにその場に居合わせたような錯覚さえ覚える。"You Send Me"の一節も採り入れ、語るように歌うイントロの8は胸焦がれる想いと熱い歌が絡み合う本作の最大の聴きもの。6,10での盛り上がりに合わせて音のレベルを上げるミキシングによる扇情効果や、何より音の良さも本作の大きな特長でＲＣＡならではある。サムと観客が創りあげたある夜の素晴らしい音楽の記録がここに封印され、擬似的でもその場に立ち会える喜びを感じられる激奨の一枚！

再生時間38分54秒。時間は短いのですが、サム・クックの明るくソウルフルなヴォーカルに圧倒されっぱなしなので、これぐらいがちょうどいい感じです。最初に司会に紹介されて登場したあと、理論どおりに曲間のMCが展開すること。観客との合唱もあること。そして録音時期が1963年であること。それらのことが人間臭いライヴ録音を作り出しています。司会者の紹介どおり、“若きミスター・ソウル”による迫力のステージです。
今回、新たにデジタル・リマスタリングが施されたうえに、この日本盤のブックレットでは、歌詞も、MCの聞き取りも、歌詞とMCの対訳も、ライナー訳も完備されています。

いきなり大音量で聞いてみました。贅沢この上ないサウンドです。特に3曲目がおすすめ。ドラムのリムショットって言うんですか？カンカンカンカン･･･てあれ。素晴らしい響きで、もうそれだけで気持ちいいぐらいです。なんというか「オリジナル原盤」レコードみたいな感じでしょうか。それにしてもサム・クックのエネルギッシュな迫力には圧倒されます。すでに古いCDで何度となく聞いていて、わかっていても６曲目のイントロの迫力なんかには背筋がゾクゾクするほど驚きました。是非とも思い切って大音量で聞いてみてください。ただし、旧盤にあった「程よく上品な雰囲気」や「客席との一体感」は薄れたかな〜と思います。それほどまでにリアルでダイレクトに感じました。決して薄っぺらなクリアー音質ではありません。バンドのサウンドも太いし迫力十分です。が、リアル過ぎてしまうんですね。ここが評価の分かれ目かもしれません。旧盤が「雰囲気」なら、こちらは「迫力」。少しでも近くに接近して聞きたいと思うなら、まず買いです。
いずれにせよ、古き良きアメリカンな気分に浸れる至福のアルバムであることには変わりありません。
