くるりのファースト。図鑑ほどマニアックでなく、チームロックほど、
テクノでなく、ワールズマインほど偏ってなく、アンテナほどストレートでない。ほどよいのだ。つまりは。叙情的なうたとほんの少しの実験精神。中学生が背伸びして髪を染めるのとは違う。青臭いけど古くさい。微妙に最高だ。

1999 年にリリースされた、くるり のメジャー 1st.アルバム。

1 曲目の出だしを聴くと何だか内向的なフォーク青年のように聞こえる岸田繁のヴォーカルだが、
とんでもない！その内面では音楽に対する真剣さがマグマのように滾っています。ただこの作品
ではそれが表に出にくい構成であることも確か。ところどころの亀裂からふつふつと湧き出る熱い
モノがまるで不完全燃焼の苛立ちかのように感じることも。

たまに（時代はずれるが）サニーデイサービスと同じくくりで見られることがあるけど、方向性はまるで
違うと思います。（ちなみに私、サニーデイも全アルバム揃っているファンですが）サニーデイの
1st.「若者たち」が荒削りながらも前向きな光を感じるのに対し、この くるり の1st. は内面に滾る
ものの放出のしかたを掴んでいない、とても "さわやか" とは言い難い（それでいて切り捨てがたい）
ものを感じます。簡単にいうとサニーデイは直線（だけどそのつど壁に当たる）、くるり は屈折（だけど
どこか覚悟の上で確信的）、といった感じです。

そしてこの くるり、次作の「図鑑」で早くもその（才能、と言ってはあまりに軽々しい）音楽魂を爆発
させます！！
五ッ星評価：★★★☆☆

このアルバムの歌には匂いがある。

それは季節のような土のような、どこか昔の記憶を
蘇らせるそんな匂い。

僕はそれをはっきりとは思い出せないけれど
何故か涙が出そうになります。

個々の曲を聴き終えた後、残る気持ちは雨上がりのような
静かでとてもやさしいものでした。
