無冠の帝王という言葉があるが、ケニー・ドーハムは常にそう呼ばれながら尊敬されていたトランペターだ。派手なテクニックを誇示するわけではなく、マイルスやアート・ファーマーのリリシズムとも一線を画している。しかし実力はビ・バップ時代から認められ、数多くのセッションに参加している。ハード・バップ時代はＪＭの初代トランペッターという栄誉に輝いたが、後輩のドナルド・バード、リー・モーガン、フレディ・ハバードに先を越され、なんとなく置いてけぼりにされた感もある。しかし、50年代も終わろうとしたときに彼の終生の傑作が生まれた。しかもワンホーンという彼の個性が最大限に生かされたフォーマットである。「蓮の花」は典型的なハード・バップチューンだが、抑制の効いたソロとつややかな音色で、ケニーの好調さがうかがえる。マイ・アイデアルやオールド・フォークスのリリカルな演奏も捨てがたいが、アローン・トゥゲザーの哀愁味を帯びた音色とフレーズはここでの最高の見せ場である。しかしなによりも、「静かなるケニー」というタイトル自体がケニー・ドーハムの本質を的確に捉え、このアルバムを類まれな好感度な作品に仕上げているように思えるのだ。心に染みる演奏である。

ケニー･ドーハムの少しくすんだ、やわらかくて暖かいトランペットの音が魅力的な、安心して聴けるワンホーンアルバム。こういうトランペットのワンホーンアルバムってなかなか無いんですよね。ロータス・ブロッサムはフレディ・ハバードがブルー･ノートの「Going Up!」でエイジアティック・レイズという曲名でもやっていますが、作曲者でもあるケニーの方が、演奏の雰囲気全体でフレディを凌駕しています。さすが燻銀ってところですね。
僕はリラックスした雰囲気のバラード「マイ・アイディアル」が大好きです。他の曲も佳曲です。
ＪＡＺＺを聴き始めた頃からの愛聴盤です。
おすすめ！

Jazzの名盤といえば必ず顔を出す本盤だが、決して評価が高くない。マニアや評論家からすると「ああ、あれね」てことになるのだろうか。確かにJazz史に大きな足跡を残したプレーヤーでもないし、技巧的にも際立ったものはない。ちょっと暗くてハートウォーミングな音色と口ずさめるような分かりやすいフレーズはとても日本人（そう、私やあなた）好み。誰からも好かれる。それで良いではないか。胸をはって「好きだ」と言ったらいいのに。なんの音楽も聴きたくないくらい疲れた夜でも、本盤は安らかな眠りに誘ってくれる。有難う、Kenny Dorham。
