1950年代後半にレッド・ガーランドがマイルス・デイヴィスのバンドの一員だった頃、デイヴィスは決まってステージを離れて、トリオの形でガーランドを主役に据えたものだった。ガーランドは完璧なジャズピアニストで、独唱者を促すとき、ブロックコードで荒々しくスウィングするとき、浮き立つような活力と明るいアティキュレーションでシングルノートのメロディをつなぎ合わせるときなど、そのときどきに合わせて理想的な和音の範囲を探し当てることができるのだ。実に繊細な演奏だが、装飾過多に陥ることは決してない。トリオを組むレギュラーメンバーは、デイヴィス・クインテットからの才能あふれるパートナーでベース奏者のポール・チェンバースとドラマーのアート・テイラーだ。テイラーのリズムの取り方は確かで、その強弱の絶妙なバランスでバド・パウエルのドラムに選ばれてもいる。ガーランドはその洗練されたハーモニーを直接交流しあう要素と一致させている。即ちその旋律の美しさやリズミカルな躍動、テキサスや南西部のブルースの伝統にしっかりと根ざしたルーツなどだ。これらの要素はエリントンのミニマリストの傑作C-Jam Bluesの中くらいのテンポのスウィングから、Willow Weep for Meに活力を与えている深みがあって憂鬱なブルースに至るまでどこを見ても明白だ。50年代後期のガーランドのプレステージ・レーベルでのレコーディングは、モダンジャズにおけるピアノトリオの模範となっており、『Groovy』はその中でも最高の作品だ。 --Stuart Broomer

レッド･ガーランドの名義のアルバムですが、ポール･チェンバースのウォーキング･ベースが聴き所だと僕は思っています。ＪＡＺＺのベースの良さが分かるでしょうし、音がせまってくるようでもう最高の演奏です！

やっと見つけましたね~！紙ジャケグルービィー!!!嬉しくてレビュー書きます。このジャケットに一目惚れしてLPを買ったのはもう、３０年も前のことです。ジャズのジの字も知らない私が、本屋で立ち読みした音楽雑誌の特集に写真入りで載っていたジャケットがこのグルービィーでした。内容はもう、すべての音楽ファンに聞いてほしいすばらしいの一言です。個人的にはこのアルバムで好きだったビートルズがぶっ飛んじゃったくらいですから・・・。今は歌入りの音楽しか流行らない時代になってきちゃいましたが、若い人もたまにはこう言う音楽に耳を傾けるのも新鮮味があっていいんじゃないかと思います。何せみんなが認めるジャズの名盤中の名盤ですから。

　ＪＡＺＺに余り興味がなかった頃、ジャケットとタイトルがカッコ良くって思わず衝動買いをしてしまったアルバム。でもこれが良かった！１曲目のＣジャムブルース。これにはまってしまった。とことん熱くはなく、印象はむしろクールなんだけど、音がグルーヴして弾むような感じが妙に気に入ってしまってＪＡＺＺを本格的に聴くキッカケとなりました。正に"Groovy"。タイトルに偽りなしです。肩肘はらずにリラックスして聴けることも秀逸。今でも我が家のへヴィーローテーションの内の一つです。コテコテのＪＡＺＺファン以外にむしろお薦め１作。いつもそばに置いておきたい素敵なアルバムです。
