1957年4月5・16日、ニューヨークで録音。カバー表紙は『Solo Piano by Thelonious Monk』とあるが、8『Monk's Mood』ではコルトレーンのサックスとウィルバー・ウェアのベースが加わりトリオ演奏となっている。また、ぼくの持つCDには名曲『'Round Midnight』の『in progress』版が入っていて、この名曲の生成過程が分かって非常に興味深い。モンクのソロ・ピアノの最初のアルバムは1954年6月にフランスで吹き込んだヴォーグ盤が存在し、本作はアメリカでのモンク初のソロ作品ということになる。

モンクの音楽を語るときによく使われるのが『モンクの独特の不協和音』という言葉だ。しかしぼくはこの音楽を単に『独特の不協和音』で片付けてしまっていいのか、と疑問に思う。リズムも独特で彼の音楽はむしろ独特の音階という方が正しいのではないだろうか。つまりは一段高いレベルの音楽を独自に構築している、と思える。それはまさにモンクの『言語』と言える世界だ。

つまり『モンク語』を喋るにはソロ・ピアノが最も簡単である。多くのミュージシャンはその『モンク語』に惹かれ、自らの楽器でその世界を語ってみたいと思い、ジャム・セッションをしたと思える。チック・コリアが1981年の『トリオ・ミュージック』の1枚でまるまる取り上げたモンクの世界はモンクの持っているエッセンスを音楽理論的に純粋に抽出したすばらしい作品だが、そういった純粋抽出された『モンク語』を聴いた後でオリジナルを聴くとその感がますます強まる。この音楽はジャズ以上の存在だと思う。

最近、とてもハマってる音楽がセロニアス・モンク
テンションをぶつけたり、オーギュメントが大好きだったりする
彼の弾き方、自分も少し似てたりして…なんてね。
特に好きなのが、彼のソロピアノ、彼のこのアルバム。
ボーナストラックはたった１曲ですが、これが２２分もある！
モンク最大のヒット曲「ラウンド・ミッドナイト」をどうやって
ソロピアノで弾くか、という経緯、ドキュメントのトラック。
トークバックで話してるのもあるし、自問自答のようにピアノを弾き
コード処理など、できあがっていく様が記録されている。
これで、モンクが少しわかるような気がしてくる…。

彼自身の底の底に横たわる、暗く鈍く光る、強靭な美意識。その発露がまさしくこの「ヒムセルフ」だと思う。少し薄暗い部屋で、苦く薫り高いコーヒーの一匙を味わうような感慨に近い。僕らは、このアルバムで、モンクが彼自身の美意識に沈潜していく危うくも美しい瞬間を共にするのである。
