　リヒテンベルガー著『ブンデスリーガ　ドイツサッカーの軌跡』でも触れられていたけど、決勝を担当したアナウンサーのツィンマーマンの実況は、当時のドイツ人すべてが空で暗記できるぐらいだったという。2-0でリードされた後、2-2に追いつき、さらにラーンが勝ち越しのゴールをあげると思わず絶叫する。

"Rahn schiesst....Tor! Tor! Tor! Tor! "(ラーンがシュート…ゴール！ゴール！ゴール！ゴール！)
8秒の沈黙
"Tor fuer Deutschland!"（ドイツのゴールです）

　日本でいえば「前畑ガンバレ」か。この勝利と実況によって、敗戦にうちひしがれていたドイツ国民は自信を取り戻したといわれるが、もちろん、映画でも忠実に再現されている。

　スポーツが人々の心を解き放つということは、本当にある。実はそれこそが『ベルンの奇跡』なのかもしれない。

　第二次大戦の終焉から9年が経過した1954年。ドイツのサッカーチームはスイスの首都ベルンで開催されるＷ杯の出場を決める。主力選手の一人ヘルムート・ラーンを慕う少年マティアスはチームの出立を見送った後、母からひとつの知らせを聞かされた。11年間ソ連に抑留されていた父が帰国するのだ。
　これは、戦争に疲弊したドイツ国民に、勇気と希望と誇りを再び取り戻す契機となったサッカーチームの奇蹟の物語…。

　この映画の中ではナショナル･チームの試合経過は決勝戦を除いて映像で具体的に描かれることはありません。テレビ中継の映像や、子供たちの草サッカー、もしくは試合後の記者会見などで試合経過が伝えられるだけです。
　だからといって食い足りない思いを抱かせることはありません。むしろ決勝戦まで映像表現をひたすら「ためにためる」ことで、最終的な「ベルンの奇蹟」を爆発させることに成功しています。

　長く苦しくそして報われることがなかったあの大戦で、多くのドイツ人が立ち直れないほどの傷を負いました。ナチの国民と蔑まれ、人間としての尊厳も国際的な栄誉も喪失した人々に、何かを信じて努力することが素晴らしいことであることを再び知らせてくれたのが「ベルンの奇蹟」だったのです。

　だからこそ、この映画の最後に表示されるドイツ語の字幕をきちんと翻訳してほしかったと思います。そこにはこう書かれています。「一年後、最後の戦争捕虜が帰国した」。マティアスの一家はあくまで架空の存在ですが、多くのソ連抑留者の家族が存在したのは史実です。そうした歴史を背負った人々にとってＷ杯優勝とは、豊かな時代の今に暮らす私たちの想像をはるかに越えた出来事であったはず。そのことを今一度噛みしめてほしいという願いが、最後の字幕には込められていたはずなのですから。

　あの時代のドイツ人たちに心寄せ、目頭を熱くしながら見た秀作映画です。

　未だ敗戦から立ち直れずにいた1954年の西ドイツの人々が、スイスW杯を通して生きる希望を取り戻していく史実を映画化。

　主人公マチアスとその父の、葛藤と心の再生がこの映画のテーマ。心の再生を支えたのが、当時世界最強のハンガリー代表に立ち向かい、見事優勝を成し遂げる西ドイツ代表の快進撃。

　W杯通算10ゴールのヘルムート・ラーンも登場し、映画ファンのみならず、サッカーファンの方も注目に値するドイツ映画の傑作。ドイツの誇りと家族愛、忠実な当時の再現に、製作者のこだわりが伝わってくる。
