This remastered pressing of his 1975 album features 10 tracks including the 2 bonus tracks 'Ace Of Wands' (live) & 'Shadow Of The Hierophant' (extended playout version). EMI. 2005.

７５年発表の１ｓｔ。ジェネシス在籍中に発表された作品だが、その製作にあたっては彼がジェネシスに提示したほとんどのアイディアを取り上げてもらえなかったことによるらしい。ちょうどジェネシスは『プロードウェイ』という最高傑作とも問題作とも言える作品を製作しており、彼の持つ、いからも“プログレ”いかにも“ジェネシス”と言うよりも“ジェネシスそのもの”のサウンドがピーターの世界とはズレていたことを伺わせる。この作品は完全にジェネシスそのもののと言い切ってしまうと若干ズレるが、おおよそ彼がイメージするジェネシスが提示されていると思う。繊細で美しく、ファンタジックでドラマティックな音絵巻。プログレ好きでこの作品を外す人間など存在しないとは思うが、本家をも凌ぐ名作と改めて断言しておこうと思う。彼こそがジェネシスの様式美を受け継ぐ伝承者であり、保守的な美意識を極限まで発揮したのがこの名作である。次作では若干アメリカナイズされたサウンドも聞かれるが、本作ではクソが付くほどのドップリの大英帝国サウンド。彼のギターも解き放たれた鳥のように生き生きとしてしており、強い躍動感を感じる。弟ジョンのフルートもハケットの作品の大きな魅力。オーボエには末期クリムゾンにもゲスト参加したロビン・ミラーが参加。ジェネシスからはフィルとマイクが参加している。(やっぱりトニーとは仲が悪かったのか？) フィルは６．で素晴しいヴォーカルも披露しており、次期ジェネシスの青写真とも取れる曲となっている。８．で美しいヴォーカルを聞かせるのはマイク・オールドアィールドの姉、サリー。英国ロック・ファンなら絶対の必聴盤。

このアルバムはタイトルにある通りのアルバムだと思います。いやむしろ個人的には月影よりこちらの方が好きかもしれません。
ハケットのギターはクリムゾンのフリップっぽいなあと昔から思っていたのですが、このアルバムを聴けば納得で、クリムゾンの影響が随所から感じられます。特に最後の曲「法皇の影」のメロトロンの使い方なんてまんま宮殿です。
その「法皇の影」ではサリー・オールドフィールドがゲストで参加しています。変拍子で突っ込んでくるようなイントロが印象的な１曲目や、組曲風の２３４曲目、哀愁漂うアコギとチェロが印象的な５曲目、フィル・コリンズがゲストヴォーカルで参加の６曲目、最終曲のテーマをかすかに響かせている７曲目と楽曲のクオリティは非常に高く、プログレファンならば誰もが感動すること間違いなしです。ジェネシスが嫌いな方も是非一度聴いてみてください。

インビジブルタッチが売れまくっていた８７年２月にはけっとのソロで始めて買ったアルバムだった。一聴した印象はフィルコリンズボーカルの曲はいいが「何か聞いてはいけないような危ない世界の音楽」というか異様にダークで、深入りしてはいけない忌み嫌うものだった。しかし、何度か聴くうちに抵抗感はなくなり、この独特な世界が快感に変わった。特にラストのサリーオールドフィールドボーカル曲は完璧だと思う。こんなドラマチックな構成の曲にはめったに出会えないだろうと感じた。この曲はマイクラザフォードと共作でジェネシスで使われなかった曲だと推察するが、ハケットはきっと自分のアルバムの最後を飾るためにストックしていたのだろう。当時ライバルのトニーバンクスと張り合いこのアルバムのヒットがきっかけで脱退することになるが、ギターだけの作品ではなく、またこのような形式の作品を作ってほしいと願う。２００３年の１月に東京でのアコースティックライブでも1を演奏していたがあのライブは自分がこれまでの人生の中で見たライブの中でも最高のライブだった。あのライブCDが出ていれば即買したい。
