   オスカー俳優ショーン・ペンの初監督作品。ベトナム戦争から戻り、問題行動ばかり起こす弟と、彼を真っ当な仕事につかせたい警察官の兄の愛憎を軸に、親子のドラマや人種問題なども絡んでいく。やがて弟は取り返しのつかない事件を起こし…。
   映画全体のヘビーだが静かなトーンは、ペンのその後の監督作『クロッシング・ガード』『プレッジ』の原点とも言える。現代のハリウッド映画を見慣れた観客には、妙な伏線やドラマチックな展開を期待させるが、そうならないところが本作の特質。兄弟間の屈折した心情というテーマを見据えつつ、あえて理解しやすいように描かないところが、ペンらしい。
   兄役デイヴィッド・モースが、弟への愛とも怒りともとれる複雑な心境を演じ、弟のヴィゴ・モーテンセンは、一見、無邪気を装いながら、自分では制御できない悪を秘めた破滅型キャラを抑えた表情でみせる。ふたりの演技が、双方のキャラへの共感と反発を交互に引き起こすのだ。デニス・ホッパー、チャールズ・ブロンソンらベテラン脇役陣が短い登場シーンで、いぶし銀の存在感。（斉藤博昭）

　警察官の兄と問題児の弟。弟の問題行為を止めさせ、更生させようとする兄の優しさが心に響きました。まさに兄弟愛。
　兄を演じるのは、『グリーンマイル』などに出演しているデビッド・モース。優しげな彼の顔立ちが、優しさを更に強調しています。弟を演じるのは、アラゴルン役でいまや大人気のヴィゴ・モーテンセン。ヴィゴの持つ雰囲気と役のイメージがピッタリではないかと思います。二人とも、素晴らしい演技だったと思います。また、チャールズ・ブロンソンやベニチオ・デル・トロも出演しています。
　この作品の中に、出産のシーンがあります。苦手な方もいらっしゃると思いますので、ご注意を。

　映像特典も付いていない仕様になっていますが、この作品の内容・この値段なので買いでしょう。

自らの野性と格闘する復員兵の弟ヴィーゴ。生誕地に留まり家族と父を大事にする警官の兄デビッド。公開当時、彼らはまだ無名だった。むしろバー店主のＤ・ホッパー、弟の妻のＰ・アークエットの方が評価は定まっていた。…でも、観てほしい。ヴィーゴの美しさ、デビッドの優しさを。若い彼らと監督ペンの、時代との、国との、家族との、歴史との戦いが生む悲しみを。…そして観てほしい、自分もそろそろ納まった、落ち着いた、と思いこんでいる貴方に。まだ何も終わっていないし、片付いてもいない。十代の貴方の姿は、今でも息をして貴方を待っている。…映画の情報として特筆すべきは、故Ｊ・ニッチェの音楽。CRAZY HORSEのサウンドになっています。。Ｂ・Ｄ・トロもチョイ出ています。

ショーンペンの監督デビュー作ですがデビューいきなりベストです。コレを超えるものをどれだけ作れるというのでしょうか。ヴィゴモーテンセンは本作でブレイクしましたしデビッドモースの優しさは涙を誘います。パトリシアアークエットもいいです。時代を超えた名作となる作品です。
