作品によって様々なキャラクターを演じ分けるニコラス・ケイジが、小市民的だが良識ある警官役チャーリーを好演。ニコラス・ケイジは善人役が好きだ。正直で善人なチャーリーに対して奥さんが対照的に描かれるが、大金が絡むと人間性が露骨に現れるのはよくあること。こういうステレオタイプな人物描写に多少鼻白む思いがしないではないが、気づかないふりするのがこの映画を楽しむコツ(笑)。奥さんに愛想をつかされても、なお二人でいることを主張するところは善人を通り越して「情けないダンナ」(笑)。

ウェイトレス、イヴォンヌ(ブリジット・フォンダ)はチャーリーからチップ代わりにもらった宝くじの権利により思いがけず大金を手にする。球場を借り切って子供たちと野球を楽しんだり、お金をばらまいたり(?)、二人のお金の使い方が浮世離れしている気もするが、この映画はこれでいいんです(笑)。イヴォンヌはチャーリーの実直な魅力に触れて次第に惹かれていく。しかし大金を手にした彼らを周りはほっておかない。理不尽ななりゆきにやりきれない思いもするが、それを受け入れる彼らの姿は清々しくもある。

実話を元にしたおとぎ話のようなハートウォーミングドラマ。ラストはチョットしたオドロキと感動を保証します。

個人的には本作のブリジットフォンダが、
一番美しく輝いていたと思う。

ニコラスケイジはアクドイ役やっても似合うけど、
このようなゆっくりした役が見てて一番安心できる。

観終わるとホッと良かったね~と言えて
こちらまで優しく幸せな気分になる。

初めに観た時は良い映画だなと思ったのだけど、
よく注意深く思い出してみると、野心家の妻は
有色人種だった。何かそういう綺麗なものだけを
うまく見せようとするアメリカに騙されてたなと
反省した。
