LAST SCENEやRECREATIONを先にシングルとして発売してたので、そこまでインパクトのない聴きやすいロックアルバムになるかなと思っていたんですが、「FREE HAND」からいきなり期待を裏切られた記憶があります。


まずやっぱりシングル曲がいいなと思い、次に流れがいいなと思い、最後に暗めな曲もヤバイなと、だんだんと評価の変わっていったスルメアルバムです。

「BGM」なんかどうやってアルバムに入れんだよと思ってましたし、曲単体の評価はカップリング曲より低いんですが見事にアルバムのアクセントになってるんですよね。
長く暗いSIRENのあとLAST SCENEのホッとする感じも素敵です。


他のアルバムより評価が低い気がするこのアルバムですが僕的にはfuturamaと並ぶスーパーカー最高傑作です。

当時初めて聞いた時に“ヤバい！そしてカッコいい！”と思ったものだが、決して聞き易い音ではないので、あまり聞き込んでなかったことに反省。
今改めて聞きなおすと、ほんとに４年前の作品かと思えるほどの強度を持つ、当時のメジャーシーンからすればあまりにも先鋭的な作品。
いや、現在のメジャーシーンにおいても相変わらず異端の音であることは変わってない。しかし数年前からのオルタナ・ハウス／ディスコ・ダヴあたりの音や、
ジャムバンドの持つ陶酔感と共振しているから驚きだ。
しかし以前からの“クールで熱い”というか微熱感？は健在で、“ポップ”であることに苦心している様子も垣間見られる。
その上でダークで退廃的ともいえる美しさに貫かれている。音は違うがDeath In Vegasを思い出した。
あぁ、こんな野心的な傑作を最後に解散してもう４年近く経つ。「ＨＩＧＨＶＩＳＩＯＮ」までの作品にはノスタルジーを感じるのだが、これは違う。
今なお心躍らされ、ヒリヒリとさせられるのだ。まるでアップデートされているかのよう。
常に新しく、美しい音楽を求め続けた彼らの最高傑作にして歴史的名盤。
レーベルゲートを外して再販を求む。
