   グレタ・ガルボにとって試金石といえる作品『椿姫』は、アレクサンドル・デュマの同名の小説を1937年に映画化したもので、ガルボは青年貴族（ロバート・テイラーが演じているがミスキャストの気味がある）と恋に落ちながらも自分の幸せを犠牲にして死にゆく娼婦を演じている。当時ハリウッドで女優を撮らせたらこの監督と評判だったジョージ・キューカー（『フィラデルフィア物語』）が監督を務め、役の上では病を患っている設定だったガルボに輝きを与え、ガルボに大スターの地位を提供するためだけの映画になりかねなかった。だがガルボのための映画にとどまることなく、ライオネル・バリモアをはじめとする共演者たち（ヘンリー・ダニエルが悪役としてきわめて優れた演技をみせている）の確かな演技に支えられ、豪華なMGM映画に仕上がった。（Tom Keogh, Amazon.com）

娼婦に恋をした青年にロバート・テイラーを起用したが、1921年サイレント映画
『椿姫』ではサイレント時代の名優ルドルフ・ヴァレンティノであっただけに
比較されがちだが、それを見事に演じきっていた。

ヴァレンティノとアラ・ナジモヴァの年齢差はなんと16歳、それに比べれば、
テイラーとガルボは6歳差でした。

悲劇のヒロインとしてのガルボのハスキーなボイスが年上の女性役として
非常に有効で、正に適役でした。

白黒でしたが、美しい映像であったことが画面を通してわかりました。
カラーであったならどんなに素敵だっただろう。そこは『フィラデルフィア物語（1940）』
『マイ・フェア・レディ（1964）』のジョージ・キューカー監督ならではの
こだわりが映し出されていた。

テイラーは3年後の1939年に当時の人気女優バーバラ・スタンウィックと結婚したが、
そういえば彼女も年上でしたね。

グレタ・ガルボ主演の名作の特別版ということで、ルドルフ・ヴァレンチノ主演のサイレント版が特典映像として収録されています。この特典映像も勿論字幕のオン、オフも可能となっており、特別版と呼ぶに相応しい丁寧な作り。

ルドルフ・ヴァレンチノといえば、サイレント映画時代のアイドル的な大スターでしたが、トーキー映画が主流になる直前に31歳という若さで急死してしまったこともあり、映画史においては伝説的な存在として語られる人だと思います。そんな存在でありながら、現在の日本では彼の主演作を見ることはあまり容易ではありません。貴重な映像を見られるという意味でも、比較して楽しめるという意味でも、価値の高いソフトになっていると思います。

この映画は完全にグレタ・ガルボのためにある作品です。
例えば美しい衣装。MGMの名デザイナー、エイドリアンによる見えない部分にまで本物のレースや宝石を使ったイブニング、セドリック・ギボンズによるこれまた芸術品クラスのマルグリットの屋敷や別荘の美術。そして忘れてはならないのはガルボの表情一つ一つを緻密なカメラワークで写し取る名カメラマン、ウイリアム・ダニエルズ…彼が写すガルボの美しさは神業です。
ありとあらゆる才能が結集して一人の女優を忘れがたい女神にしています。1930年代〜50年代までのスターが最もスターらしかった時代に作られた傑作です。
