現代の吟遊詩人は、かつてのようにハープを片手に樫の木の森を旅し、城から城へと遍歴するだけではすまないらしい。Peter Hammill は本当に優れた詩人であり、ソング ライターである。だが同時に、ミュージシャン、パフォーマー、サウンドクリエイターとしての強靭な自我をも持ち合わせた、天性のハイブリッドでもある。最新テクノロジーに対する彼の好奇心の強さ、そして旺盛なチャレンジ精神は、一連の作品によって十分に証明されている。そのような性向は、彼のアーチストとしての創造性や表現を刺激し、拡張する重要な要素のひとつであったが、一方で様々な相克と葛藤、試行錯誤を生じる危険な副作用をもたらすことにもなり、"Nadir" あるいは "K" などといった alter ego を自ら宣言せざるを得ない時さえあった。

この最初のソロアルバムには、ポップソング、ラブソングの書き手としての彼の卓越した才能が凝縮されているように思う。そして、"Songwriter's Guild" に安住できなかった天才の悲劇も微かに感じられる。もちろん、このアルバムは彼の音楽の全てを語るものではない。それでも、たしかに彼のエッセンス、「彼自身」が鮮やかな光を放つ重要な作品だ。71 年作品。

ようやく予約していた「フールズ・メイト」の紙ジャケット版が届いた。

ボーナストラック五曲はモノラルだが必聴だ。「リ・アウェイクニング」の後半部のハミルの高揚し、感情移入過多になってしまった様子は必ずや君の微笑みを誘い、またお気にも召すことだろう。
ジャケット、盤ともにオリジナルを復刻しているようだ
（内側にはハミルがグランド・ピアノに向かっているカラー写真が配される）。
赤岩和美、ハミルのコメント（原文／和訳）等のライナーノーツも入る。
しかし、このような名盤が一般的評価を得ることなく世に埋もれていていいのだろうか？

名盤です！絶対に買いですよ！特にオススメは中期のヴァンダーグラーフとキング・クリムゾン！聴けば聴くほど両者は接近しているような印象です！フリップは精神的な部分でハミルから影響を受けているのが彼らのサウンドから伝わってくる！（私のプロフも参照）」
