モダンジャズにおけるドラムの役割は非常に大きいが、意外にもドラマーのリーダーアルバムは少なく、またリーダーになるジャズマンも限られている。そもそも有能なドラマーは数多くのセッションに兼任して参加しており、ホーン奏者ほどの数も陣容も不要で、むしろ実力者に演奏機会が集中してしまう。50年代から60年代にかけてブレイキー、アートー・テイラー、フィリー・ジョー・ジョーンズ、マックス・ローチ、エルビン・ジョーンズ、といったおなじみの顔ぶれがジャズドラム界を支配していたといっていい。その中で登場したピート・ラロカは少し後でデビューした天才トニー・ウイリアムスらとともに新しい時代を予感させる新世代のドラマーであり、新主流派を数多く擁していたブルーノートの中で独特の役割を果たした。この初リーダー作も、ジョー・ヘンダーソンという重量級テナーとスティーブ・キューンというこれまた才能あふれるピアニストらを共演者にラテンや中東のムードをモーダルかつポリリズミックな手法でユニークな世界に仕立てている。ラロカは自身のオリジナル曲3曲披露し作曲の面でも才能を発揮している。個人的にはスタンダードナンバー、レイジー・アフタヌーンやベーシスト、スティーブ・スワローのオリジナル、エイダーダウンが気に入っている。70年代には引退し弁護士になったという知性派だが繊細でしかも野生的なオリジナリティを発揮した天才肌ドラマーとして記憶に残る存在であった。97年に復帰したと聞くが現在はどうしているのだろう。
