1985年7月パリのパレ・デ・コングレ・ストュディオ・ド・ラ・グラン・グルメでスタートしたスタンダーズの世界的ツアーは翌86年も続けられ、翌々年の87年10月にアメリカで12回、カナダで1回の演奏を持って終了する。このライブはそのスタートの7月2日に行われた第二夜のものである。
つまり、『スビリッツ』という癒しの期間が85年の5月から6月にかけての4週間であるから、その後すぐに『これをやらねば』と始めた所作だということだ。

彼のやろうとした事は、スタンダード・ナンバー(伝統)に現代的な感性を持ち込む事だった。やっている曲、例えば『星影のステラ』など、ずっとジャズ愛好家に愛されてきたナンバーであるが、キースの持続的なリズム演奏からピーコックの歌うようなソロ、最後はディジョネットが長3度でルバートして終わるという11分だ。
そこには全く新しい感性で洗われたスタンダードを誰しも感じずにはおられない。

あえて言えば、神格化されているビル・エバンス・トリオ(ビル・エバンス(p)、スコット・ラファロ(b)、ポール・モチアン(ds))を遥かに凌駕している。そう断言させてもらおう。

グレン・グールドやキース・ジャレットの音は本当に美しい。
ジャレットの演奏のなかでも最も好きなものの一つ。
そして、このＣＤのなかでも、さらにダントツで好きなのが、
表題曲でもある「星影のステラ」の出だし。「初めの２秒」で、そこはジャレットの世界。

ヴィヴァルディの「チェロソナタ」も初めの２秒で香気溢れる世界に誘われるが、
何と言っても、ジャレットの演奏はジャレットの本当に美しい世界に連れて行ってくれる。

２０世紀最高のピアニストのひとり、キース・ジャレットの名演を是非とも聴いて下さい。
