ジャズのカッコよさは、夜、大人、退廃、クール、ハードボイルドといったキー・ワードに象徴されるが、マイルス・デイビスこそ、その要素を全て併せ持ったミュージシャンだといえよう。その中でも、このアルバムはマイルス・ダンディズムの極致を地でいったきわめてクールでカッコイイ演奏である。オリジナル・クインテットを解散したのは、コルトレーンとフィリー・ジョーの麻薬が激しくなり、グループの統制やモラルに問題が出てきたからだという。そんなマイルスが心機一転ヨーロッパに渡って、現地のミュージシャンと録音した映画音楽である。当時話題になっていたヌーベル・バーグ映画で、サスペンスの中にもハードで粋な大人の雰囲気が伝わってくる。ヌーベル・バーグとジャズの相性はすこぶるよく、「危険な関係」や「大運河」などでもブレイキーやＭＪＱといった一流ミュージシャンが起用されヨーロッパにおけるモダン・ジャズの隆盛に一役買った。今回のアルバムはオリジナルLPに収録されていなかった別テイクをすべて追加した完全盤で、映画用に加工される以前の生の演奏を聴けるのが魅力だといえる。当時のマイルスはすでにモダン・ジャズの貴公子で、同映画の主演女優のジャンヌ・モローに自らの愛器で迫り、口説いたらしいが、ジャズに興味のなかったモローに袖にされたというエピソードを聞いたことがある。それでも、パリが似合うマイルスは、やはりダンディでカッコイイミュージシャンだ。
