スタン･ゲッツとジョアン･ジルベルトがアントニオ･カルロス･ジョビン
をフューチャーして、１９６３年にニューヨークで録音された作品。
３年に渡る欧州でのブランクによって散々酷評を受けたスタン･ゲッツ、
ボサノヴァリズムを作り上げたバイーア出身のジョアン･ジルベルト、
多くの作曲もリズムに恵まれなかったアントニオ･カルロス･ジョビン。
野合との指摘もあるが、３人の奇才によってこの傑作が生まれた。
そして、この背景には当時ヴァーヴだったクリード･テイラーが
プロデュースを担当していることも付け加えたい。結果、
多くの賛同を得てスタン･ゲッツは本作でグラミー賞を受賞し、
白人テナーとしてのゆるぎない地位を得た。
また、本作は純粋な音楽とは違った側面からも多くの注目を集めた。
ジョアン･ジルベルトとスタン･ゲッツの音楽性の違いからくる確執や、
本来、ギターとヴォイス程度の素朴な編成からくる音楽にサックスが
執拗に入り込んでくるこの作品は果たしてボサノヴァといえるのか？
等、様々な論議をかもし出した。しかし、その音楽性は極めて豊かで、
いわゆる純粋なボサノヴァの作品の追随をも許さないものがある。
それが顕著に出てくる場面は３者それぞれ特徴的で、
スタン･ゲッツのバッキングプレイと、ジョアン･ジルベルトの声とギター、
そして、アントニオ･カルロス･ジョビンのピアノである。
いずれも”ささやく”ような演奏に徹していて、決して前に出てこない。
しかし、ハマッタポイントに音を入れてくるので非常に目立つ。
静かな音にも明確な主張が見て取れるのだ。
ボサノヴァに限らず、ブラジル音楽を聴く上でこの作品を欠かす事は
出来ない。いや、この作品の与えた影響はジャズを始めとした多くの
国の音楽に色濃く現れており、音楽を聴く方全てが耳にすべき音では
ないかと思う。それだけ画期的なのだ。今聴いても実に新鮮である。

高校時代（かれこれ３０年前）レコード屋で流れていた曲に心惹かれて以来、買いそびれていたジョアン。（当時は金が無くて買えなかった）
ようやく購入したＣＤは、期待に違わぬ内容。う〜む、このつぶやくような歌声、心が癒される！・・・ただ、難を言えば、スタンゲッツのサックスの音がちょっと・・・。割れているというか、ジョアンの声量のレベルとアンマッチで、突然大音量!当時の録音技術から言うとこの水準なのか。あるいは、ミキサーが敢えてこうしたのか。音楽のプロではない小生には、分かりませんが。

もう４０年以上前の１９６３年の録音で、ボサノバとジャズを融合させ全世界で大ヒット。仕掛け人はのちにＣＴＩレコードを創設するプロデューサーのクリード・テイラー。面子はスタン・ゲッツ、ホアン・ジルベルト、カルロス・ジョビンと豪華。あまりに有名になった一曲目「イパネマの娘」でジルベルトの美声と、妻のアストラッドのちょっとヘタで、ちょっと危なげなヴォーカルが話題を呼んだ。この「超名盤」何度聴いても古びず、飽きない。夏の夕暮れにピッタリ。殺伐とした日常を忘れてイパネマ海岸にひとっ飛び。（松本敏之）
