デヴィッド・ワイルド編の『ジョン・コルトレーン・ディスコグラフィー』によれば1が1967年3月7日、2・3が1967年2月15日、4が1967年春録音。1967年7月17日の死の直前の録音。本作がコルトレーンの遺作と言えるだろう。最後のメンバーは以下の通り。ジョン・コルトレーン(ts、fl)、アリス･コルトレーン(p)、ジミー･ギャリソン(b)、ラシッド・アリ(ds)、ファラオ・サンダース(pic、fl)。

ちなみにエリック･ドルフィーは1964年6月29日に亡くなっている。

特徴的なのはこのアルバムで初めてコルトレーンがフルートを吹いていることだろう。ドルフィーの遺品のフルートと思われる。2の『トゥ・ビー』で聴けるこのフルートはインドの北ベンガル地方の民謡をベースにしているそうである。ひたすら求道するコルトレーンの音楽はここに宗教と一つになった。

コルトレーンは一瞬一瞬の自分を否定し、次の自分へと前進し、その自分を叉否定し前進していった。これはコルトレーンの遺作ではあるが、一瞬のコルトレーンでもある。1926年9月23日の誕生から1967年7月17日の死までのひたすら前進するその生き様を聴くべきなのだろう。
