最高傑作と謳われる「至上の愛」に勝るとも劣らない名作。人によっては「クレッセント」の方を取ることもあり得る。マッコイ、ジミー、エルヴィンの不動のカルテットでの到達点。バラードナンバーにおけるコルトレーンのプレイは、静謐の中に崇高さを秘めて聴く者に深い感動を与えずにはいない、このテナーの音を聴いて心を動かさない人は誰もないであろう、そんな美しいプレイです。一種悟りの境地にある美しさ。このアルバムからは、数ヶ月後にフリージャズの世界に踏み入れることを誰が予想したでしょうか。この「クレッセント」は、聴く者を圧倒するプレイが多いコルトレーンの中にあって、癒してくれるアルバムであるといえます。これを聴かずしてコルトレーンは語れない、そんな作品です。

数あるコルトレーンのアルバムの中でも最右翼にランクされる傑作である。僕自身も最も好きなコルトレーンのアルバムの一つといっていいほど評価している。クレッセントの出だしから、ただならぬ雰囲気で、そのソロからは単なるリラックスとか美などと呼べない精神の高みを感じ、思わず身震いさせられる。ワイズ・ワンも心地よさと精神性が一体化した瞑想の世界にいざなう名曲、名演だ。「アセンション」のアバンギャルドとも「至上の愛」の構築と荘厳性とも「バラード」の安らぎとも違った解脱の境地といえそうな静寂さだ。しかもバラードのような予定調和的なものは一切感じさせない力強さと深さを兼ね備えているのだ。単に寛ぐというより、仕事に疲れ、しかも次なる活力を求めたいときに一人静かに聴き込むアルバムだと思う。きっとそこから癒しと生きるうえでの勇気と力が得られるであろう。
