あくまで群像劇ですこれは。

過剰な演出は極力抑えているのは好感もてますが、キャラクターの掘り下げがもう一つ。
多少嘘であっても、もう少し脚色してほしかった。
オーバーな表現じゃなくても、リアルなセリフや演技でもっと感情移入させられる脚本が書けたはず。

TVにしてはCG等のエフェクトも及第点ですが、やはり見せ方がヘタ。

とまあ否定的な感想ばかり書きましたが、ほど良いバランスで色々な人物にスポットがあたるので、３時間近くある本編も飽きる事無く観られ、且つキャサリン好きは彼女のプリプリ・ハツラツとした顔を見るだけで満足なはず。
この後の『マスク・オブ・ゾロ』ではほんと垢抜けましたな〜。

※ジェームズ・キャメロン版と比べるのはナンセンス。

英国を発つ豪華客船に、夫との愛に疑問を感じる裕福な婦人、詐欺師、新天地での生活を
夢見る移民、ケチな仕事に愛想の尽きかけている船員など様々な人物が乗ってくる。
たまたまタイタニックで出会った彼らの人生行路は複雑に絡み合っていき・・・

主役はキャサリン・ゼタ・ジョーンズだが、一人一人の人物像がしっかりしていて、
群像劇としてはかなり良くできている。特撮も誤魔化しという意味では健闘しており、
興ざめな「絵」はほとんどない。

しかし、ほとんど声を上げることのなかったと言われるスミス船長がワンワン喚いたり
もうどうしようもないことで航海士を非難するなど、脚本が脇道にそれる部分が散見され、
そこがドラマの流れも止めてしまうので、見苦しい。
そういった史実ぽい部分が実は史実とかけ離れている場面も多く、非常に興ざめだった。
架空のドラマとしては優れているだけに、その部分での奇妙な台本と演出が惜しまれる。

　キャメロン版では、二人の身分の違う恋人同士をメインに進行しているので、
周りの状況についてはさらっと流している程度ですが、
こちらでは　・沈没時のほかの船の動き・通信士の努力・移民たちの船内での暮らし
・船会社社長イスメイがいかに「早く着くか」にこだわっていたか
・スミス船長の人柄　などなどについて、ほぼ史実に忠実に作られています。
ドラマティックでより冒険的なものを求めるのならキャメロン版でもいいのですが(これはこれで十分感動しますが)、
史実に近いものを求めるなら、こちらがお勧めです。
　
　当時のファッション・上流階級の人々の生活スタイル・一流の調度品などに興味のある人にはまた、
別の視点から楽しめると思います。
　しかし、これは実際にあった出来事ですので、今なお大勢の乗客乗員が
海の底で眠っているという事実もお忘れなく。
