ニールがハーヴェストで大成功をはたした後、彼の盟友クレイジー・ホースのダニー・ヴィットンやローディーのブルース・ペリーがドラッグで相次いで死んだこと等にショックを受けた後に７４年始めリリース予定で作ったが、内容の暗さがハーヴェストでの成功に水をさすとしてレコード会社に発売を一旦拒否され、７５年７月にやっとリリースできたといういわくつきの作品。確かにタイトル曲など死やドラッグを扱った歌詞の曲もあり、ことにタイトル曲はブルースの死を直接採り上げたものであるが、テンションの高さ・集中力は凄まじいものがあり、この曲はその後ニールのライヴの定番となる。また、カントリー調の曲が少ないといわれるが、穏やかなメロディーの曲もある。ロック色の強い演奏は以前の作品でもあったし、そんなにこの頃の彼の作品でのカントリー色対ロック色の比を崩しているとは思わない。前者の曲ではなんと言ってもメロー・マイ・マインドが出色の出来。魂の底から搾り出すようなニールの歌には鳥肌がたつ。後者では鬼気迫るタイトル曲、フィルモア・イーストでのライヴであるＭ５が代表的。ほとんどの曲でクレイジー・ホースの残った２人とベン・キース、そして後にＥ．ストリート・バンドに参加するニルス・ロフグレンが演奏をサポートしている。この時期のニルスのギターとピアノの演奏を堪能できるのは嬉しい。

結論として暗い曲が若干多いかもしれないが、陰惨極まってリスナーを拒むような作品ではない。ニール・ファンならニールのつらい精神状態の中で作られた魂の叫びに共感することだろう。

どこが暗いのかさっぱりわからん。確かみんなで酒飲んで酔っ払って演奏した、ほとんど一発録りの作品じゃなかったかな。友達を想いながら弾き歌い最高の供養をしたんだろうな。 途中にはニールのマイクにギターかなんかが当たる音まで入っている。これは紛れもないブルース。全曲心をかきむしるけど、特にアルバカーキが気に入ってる。

四畳半フォークって、儲かったみたいですね？
なぎら健壱氏曰く、
「ステージ本番で、わざとボロボロのジーンズに履き替え、それを衣装にして」
歌っていたとか。
日本のフォーク、日本のロックのミュージシャンの皆さんは、
ニール・ヤングがこんなものすごいアルバムを発表していた時期に、
いったい、何をやっていたんですか？
ひとりひとりに、訊いて回りたいです。
「恥ずかしくなかったのか？」
と。
Wikipediaによれば、1975年オリコンシングルチャート1位は

昭和枯れすゝき　さくらと一郎

こちらのほうがよっぽどニールに肉薄していたというお粗末！
