【プロフィール】
1963年頃にカリフォルニアで結成されたダニー&ザ・メモリーズが、6人組のロケッツに発展。そのライヴを観たニール・ヤングの要望でアルバムに起用されたダニー・ウィットン(g)、ビリー・タルボット(b)、ラルフ・モリーナ(ds)で69年に結成。71年『クレイジー・ホース』でデビュー。以後ニールとの共演と並行した独自の活動を続ける。また映画『イヤー・オブ・ザ・ホース』でもニールと共演。共演作は『ニール・ヤング・ウィズ・クレイジー・ホース』『ZUMA』『ラスト・ネヴァー・スリープス』ほか。

ニール・ヤングは周期的にカントリー色の濃いアルバムに回帰します（最近では傑作「プレーリー・ウィンド」）が、本作はそのカントリー路線の第一弾となった作品です。全米１位の大ヒットになった「孤独の旅路」（リンダ・ロンシュタット等のバック・コーラスが豪華！）のイメージが余りにも強いので、全曲カントリーであるかのような誤解をもたれる方がいるかもしれませんが、そうではありません。ニール独特のエレキ・ギター・サウンドが挑発的な「アラバマ」「歌う言葉」、アコースティック・ギター１本での弾き語り（ダメージ・ダン）、そしてストリングスを加えた３，７曲目といった具合に、彼がこの時期やりたかった音楽の幅の広さに驚嘆します。このうち、ストリングスを加えた曲はアレンジとしてあまり成功しているとは言い難いですが、メロディーは美しくていい曲です。歌詞の面では、５曲目は「リヴィング・ウィズ・ウォー」にあっても不思議はなく、３０年以上たっても人間は大して進歩していないことを実感します。私にとってのニールの最高傑作は本作ではありませんが、彼の初期のカントリー・フレーバーを楽しめる代表作、そして何よりも力強いバックのサポートを得てニールのアコースティック・ギター、ハーモニカ、そして歌が冴える名曲中の名曲「孤独の旅路」を収めた秀作として、是非コレクションに加えることをお薦めします。

７２年発表、ニール・ヤングのソロ最高傑作と言える名盤『ハーヴェスト』。
素朴なフォーク・テイストの「週末に」「ハーヴェスト」、賛否両論あるオーケストラ・サウンドを取り入れた「男は女が必要」「世界がある」、ニールの特徴的なエレキ・ギターが光る「アラバマ」などどれも名曲。

中でも一際目立つのは、彼の代表曲であり全米１位を記録した大ヒット曲「孤独の旅路」。シンプルなアコースティック・ギターとボブ・ディランを想わせるハーモニカが印象的な哀愁漂うフォーク・ロックの名曲です。

また、ニールが素朴に弾き語る「ダメージ・ダン」と、そこからノンストップでなだれ込む「歌う言葉」への流れも絶妙です。この「歌う言葉」はまさにこの名盤を締め括るに相応しく、エレキ・ギターとピアノという至ってシンプルな構成ながら、ドラマティックな展開を見せるスケールの大きい名曲です。後半のニールの魂溢れるギター・ソロがとても印象的です。

ニール・ヤングの最高傑作というと前作『アフター・ザ・ゴールド・ラッシュ』か本作かで意見が分かれますが、私は本作を最高傑作に挙げたいと思います。素朴さと壮大さを併せ持った本作は最初から最後までの流れが素晴らしく、アルバム通して隙がありません。ちょっと意外なストリングスが気になるという方も多いようですが、私はこれはこれでアリだと思います。もちろん、『アフター・ザ・ゴールド・ラッシュ』も素晴らしいので、この２作は必聴です。とくにボブ・ディランが好きな方にオススメです。

　あえてこの名盤に厳しい評価をつけたいと思う。
　一番売れたアルバムゆえ、ニールの代表作のように思われているが、彼の真価はこんなものではない。もちろん、リーナード・スキナードと物議を醸した「アラバマ」とか、彼の名を不朽のものとした「ダメージ・ダン」や、名曲「歌う言葉」が入っていたりするが、あくまでこれは腰を痛めてエレキが弾けなくなったニールのリハビリアルバムなのである。完成度では前作「アフター・ザ・ゴールド・ラッシュ」に劣るし、「らしさ」では「ズマ」が勝る。そしてアルバムに最も求められる「アウラ」では、「今宵その夜」がダントツ。
　というわけで、もちろん悪いアルバムではないのだが、以上に列記したアルバムを本作は超えるものではない。それははっきり記しておきたい。
