デビュー前から、ニコ、トム・ラッシュ、ニッティ・グリティ・ダート・バンドなど数多くのアーティストが彼の曲をこぞってとりあげ、その才能が注目されていた。アサライム・レコードの創設者であるデイヴィッド・ゲフィンに認められ、満を持して発表されたのがこの記念すべきファースト・アルバムである。

【プロフィール】
1948年10月9日、西ドイツ、ヘイデルベルグ生まれ。51年にロサンゼルス、67年にニューヨークへ移住。その後再び西海岸に戻り、リンダ・ロンシュタットやバーズに自作曲を提供して注目を集めた。72年にアルバム『ジャクソン・ブラウン・ファースト』でソロ・デビュー。グレン・フライと共作したイーグルスの大ヒット曲「テイク・イット・イージー」や、自身の作品をコンスタントに発表、西海岸を代表するシンガー・ソングライターとなった。76年には妻のフィリスが自殺するという悲劇に見舞われるが、その悲しみを乗り越えて、傑作『プリテンダー』をリリースし、全米でプラチナ・セールスを記録。その後77年3月に初来日、79年に原子力発電所建設反対運動“ノー・ニュークスに関わり、コンサートに出演。80年代以降も真摯なスタンスによる作品をコンスタントに発表、アメリカを代表するシンガー・ソングライターとして活動している。

今から３５年前に発表された彼のデビュー・アルバム。まだデヴィッド・リンドレー等の後に常連となるメンバーは参加しておらず、楽器はアコギ、ピアノが中心。後年の作品と比較すると、さすがに洗練度の点で物足りない曲もあるが、彼の瑞々しい感性は痛いほど伝わってくる。「ジャマイカ・セイ・ユー・ウィル」は彼でないと書けない曲だし、ヒット曲「ドクター・マイ・アイズ」（最高全米第８位）にも恵まれ、「ロック・ミー・オン・ザ・ウォーター」は心に響く名曲中の名曲。他の曲も秀逸であり、すべての曲に共通して言えるのが、歌詞の奥深さ。詩人としての彼の本領は本作から発揮されている。従って、本作を手にする人は歌詞もじっくり読んで下さい。２０代前半の彼の感じたこと、そしてアメリカの姿が見えてくるでしょう。

デビュー以前からソングライターとしてその名を知らしめていたジャクソン・ブラウン。　そんな彼の待ちに待たれたソロデビューが本作となります。　バックを支えるミュージシャンの中にクラーレンス・ホワイト、アルバート・リー、クレイグ・ダーギー、デビット・クロスビーなどの超一流ミュージシャンがいるところからも、広い友好関係を生み出す彼の人間性、レコード会社が彼にかける意気込みが伝わってきます。　瑞々しい曲と透き通った声が、選び抜かれた言葉で貴方の心を魅了することは間違いありません。

ジャクソンブラウンのデビューアルバムとなった本作品。
ヒット曲としては、イーグルスが歌ってヒットしたティーク・イット・イージーが含まれている。
ジャクソン自身としても、ドクター　イン　マイ　アイズをヒットさせている。
全体的な流れは、アコースティックギターをメインとしたシンプルな曲がが中心となっているが、この人の真骨頂である「歌詞」を読みながら聞いていると一層味わい深いアルバムと感じて頂けるでしょう。それゆえこのアルバムが、デビュー作であり、かつ最もジャクソンブラウンらしいと感じる次第です。
