予想はしているかもしれないが、『Timeless』はあなたの両親が慣れ親しんだセルジオ・メンデスではない。オープニングの「Mais Que Nada」を聴いてみるといい。ポスト60年代、ポスト・ボサノバ、キッチュな大ヒット作『Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66: Greatest Hits』にも収録されていた一曲だ。そこにシンプルでなめらかなグルーヴはない。ブラック・アイド・ピーズが、この陽気な演奏に参加している。そして生まれた作品は、スタン・ゲッツのテナーサックス経由でボサノバがジャズやポップと出会った時に起こる知的な衝突と同じものだ。ただ本作では、その出会いがラウンジと、そしておそらくはストリートの間で起こっただけの話。ジョン・レジェントとインディア・アリーは、ダウンテンポのネオ・ブラジリアンのノリで、「Please Baby Don't」とタイトルトラックでそれぞれセッションを続けている。だが、こうした曲がいったん終われば、陽気なビートが復活し、パーティのノリでアルバムは続く。しかし、不安に思うことはない。ブラック・アイド・ピーズが、無邪気なヘッドバンギングとチルアウトできるダンスのステップに自然と誘ってくれている。『Timeless』を聴けば、本作があなたの両親が慣れ親しんだセルジオ・メンデスではないとわかる。しかも、この作品を聴いたあなたの両親は、ウィリアムとブラック・アイド・ピーズの重要な役割を聞きとって、自分の子どもが慣れ親しんでいるブラック・アイド・ピーズではないと言うことだろう。

このアルバムは正直なところ「Sergio MendesをFeaturing(またはサンプリング)したBlack Eyed Peas主導のトリビュートアルバム」って雰囲気です。しかしSergio Mendesのボサノヴァの雰囲気を崩さないでうまくまとめてる好企画盤といったところでしょうか、作品としては面白く質のいいものができたと思います。
実はあまりWill I Amをラッパーとしてはあまり高く評価していない自分ですが(プロデューサーとしては最高!)、彼のラップはこのトラックや雰囲気に似合います。１のマ・シュケ・ナダはもうBlack Eyed Peasの新曲ですね。この一曲だけで購入を決める人も多いと思います。3rd〔Elephank〕にSexyというSergio Mendesをサンプリングした曲が入ってましたが今回のほうが自分は好きです。Sexyもかなり好きですけど
その後も色々なラッパーやシンガーが参加してますがラッパー共演曲よりもシンガー共演曲の方が完成度が高いです。Erykah Baduの世界観、Stevie Wonderのハーモニカ、Jill Scottの浮遊感も素晴らしいですがJustin TimberlakeとJohn Legendが最高！改めて彼らの実力を確認させられました。
唯一のレゲェからの共演者、Mr.Vegasはちょっとアルバムの雰囲気を壊しているような気が…　まぁラッパーやレゲェDee Jayの参加曲はあくまでオマケでR&Bシンガーとの曲をメインに楽しんでみてください。なかなかに充実した楽しめるアルバムですよ

Sergio Mendesのニューアルバムという設定ではあるけれど、プロデューサーであるBlack Eyed Peasのwill.i.am色が強く、これまで彼の楽曲を聴いてきた往年のファンにとっては少し戸惑うアルバムではないか？という気がする。
実際僕も"Mas Que Nada"が、TVやラジオでヘビーローテーションで鳴っているのを聴いて、Sergio MendesのHip Hopアーティスト達によるトリビュートアルバムという形式であるように思っていた。
この2人のコンビネーションは、ブラジリアン・ミュージックの更なる進化や発展、大衆性との迎合、そういった多くの可能性を見越してこそ成り立ったものだと思っている。だからこそ、こういったアルバムを制作したSergio Mendesという偉大な経歴を持つアーティストに更なる好感を僕は持つようになった。

サウンドは前述したように、プロデューサーであるwill.i.am色全開で、彼の大ヒット作となったMonkey Businessに少し似た雰囲気を持ち、POP色の強い綺麗なアレンジの中に、クールさや遊び心が詰まった面白いアルバムだと思う。また、参加している豪華なミュージシャン達の魅力も上手く引き出ているかのように思う。
また、ブラジリアン・ミュージックの特徴でもある豪快で熱いグルーヴの中に存在する、微かな哀愁のようなものもちゃんと感じる事が出来、作品として非常にクオリティが高い。

そういった訳で僕としてはとても面白いアルバムであったけれど、一般的には色々と賛否両論が別れる作品でもあるように思う。これをSergio Mendesとして聴くのは少し違和感があるのは否めない所だし、これがブラジリアン・ミュージックかと言われれば違うと答えてしまうだろう。そして彼の多くの作品群から見ると、充分なクオリティを持ったアルバムではあるが、代表作という事にはならないのだろう。
ただ、Sergio自身が目指していた新しい方向性や可能性は、これからのブラジリアン・ミュージックの中で更に発展し、道を開いて行く事になるように思う。そういった意味合いを込めて、僕は純粋に素晴らしい作品であると評価したい。

　彼のボサノヴァは、外でも家でも、どこでもよく聴きます。いつ聴いてもいいなぁとは思うけれど、新鮮さはなくなっていました。でも、このCD聴いて、彼のすごさを再確認しました。しばらくはこのCDばっかり聴いちゃいそうです。そして、これまでのも再び新鮮な気持ちで聴けそうです。
